Governor Shaft and gear Removal
My crank case is open for a seal replacement. While I'm in there should I remove the Governor shaft and Gear? What would be the benifits of this? Motor is a 2013 MB 4500 BD. Thanks for any input. I did a search and nothing much came up.

Re: Governor Shaft and gear Removal
then yes, you can remove the gear and other innards, and cut the shaft below the keeper ring, or pull it and thread that hole where the shaft goes through the top of the block and put a bolt in it.

Re: Governor Shaft and gear Removal
I always do this when making mods or whenever I have to crack open a case. Advantage is, no non used parts inside the crankcase to possibly come loose or break and cause catastrophic failure. Good idea imo.

Governor Shaft and gear Removal
Like smoke and Russ said take it out!!!!!!! I've seen the results of the gov gear letting go inside a built engine and it isn't good. Nothing is salvageable. It should just slide off the shaft might have to use a small pry bar. I cut the flattened part off the bottom of the shaft, two snap rings hold the shaft in, one inside and one out. I found it's easier to take it out the through the crankcase but you'll have to rotate the engine over to gain clearance and watch those gears they can be sharp.
