I am completely new to Surface drive motors and have been lurking around this site for months learning lots of stuff.

I just picked up a 2005 Prodrive 36 with only 130 hours on it. It has the marshmellow exhaust and a mikuni 42mm carb. I am not sure if it has an internal upgrades but just running in my garage the revs will stop exactly at 4000.

From what I found on this site it should be a few hundred more? Does it have a rev limiter?

I also found the Mikuni manual but looking for a little more insight on how to get my revs up.

1. look at carb.
2. watch throttle cable move as you twist the throttle.
3. adjust cable so it gives u more rpm's. [usually a screw on the carb allowing the cable to move more]
4. adjust it till the valves rattle, then back off a tad.
5. enjoy

former owner probly adjusted the throttle to stop at 4000rpm's so the motor would stop blowing up. u probly ought to leave it there.

So 4000 doesn't seem low? I was reading guys were going up to 4600-4700 i just want to make sure I get everything I can out of the motor but I don't want to be at a shorter life for the internals.

Also is there a purpose for this chain on a shaft? It is rubbing on my aluminum on the engine and will definitely wear before the bolt does.

This problem seems odd. Out of water with a mikuni even 1/4 throttle should rev to the moon. What does it sound like when at max rpms? Video?

Sounds good, yeah I will cut it off it was vibrating like crazy and with it hitting the engine its gone, on the carb I will look and make sure I have full travel. It sounds good at full throttle it isn't bouncing around or hunting at all. I will try and get a video tonight.

watch the slide instead, not the throttle cable. if it doesn't open fully, then throttle cable needs adjustment.

or, just don't rev it up in neutral, or get a rev limiter. top speed is irrelevant to me, but I can load up my boat and still plane out, which a stock motor won't do. it's not for everyone, but neither is stock and speed isn't always the reason.

So after looking at my carb it looks like it isnt a mikuni unless it is an older one or something. I dont think it is a stock one? I was also looking at my idle rpm and its at about 1600 seems way to high.

Anyone recognize this carb?

From other threads looks like 1200 is a pretty good idle speed?

Thats a stock carb with a different flavor airfilter adapter. So at 4k its sitting on the governer

Judging by that carb you have a 32 PD NOT a 36.....
