Post What would you consider low or high hours on a surface drive
I am looking to buy a used boat with a surface drive. I was wondering what you guys would consider to be low hours and what would be high hours? I have been around boats my whole life but never boats with mud motors.

Bought one with something approching 850 hours, replaced the clutch, the bearings in the lower unit, muffler, a regulator, and a coil. Not too bad considering none of that had ever been changed except the bearings in the lower unit. It needs a new stator right now, but that only affects charging.

I've seen motors that look like they've spent a month on the bottom of the Atlantic with 100 hours, I've seen some with 500 hours that were well maintained and looked great, it really depends.

I'm a cheap SOB, so I always buy used. If you can tell that the seller is clearly a dumbass it's probably safe to assume that routine maintenance and TLC were not done. I bought a long tail that had 1,100 hours for $700. It needed new coils, new wiring harness, kill switch, prop, seals, throttle, choke rod and GD grease auto loader. The owner said it was in good condition. After I replaced all of that I put 200 hours on it without a hiccup. My current SD was bought with 130 hours, no issues at all 3 years later. Main thing to look at in my opinion is the case for leaks, check the oil level, make sure it cranks up without any issues and runs smooth. Check the compression if you want. There are good deals out there, and most of this stuff is pretty easy to replace/fix. There is thread on here about hours, some of the guys on here have motors with thousands of hours with nothing but oil, filter and seal changes.

Sure, the price is absolutely ridiculous.

But it's not more ridiculous than 98% of the low-ball, brokedick assheads on here who think that coming within $2500 of asking price might just make a deal happen.

Selling anything on here is a real adventure.

My personal favorites are:

Via PM:
1) WHAT'S YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR?!?!? (So they can then knock 25% off that.)

or,

(2) CASH IN HAND!!!!

Well no shit, buddy. Did you think I was going to offer 0% financing?

The hoops that I've jumped through to prove my used motors for sale are in excellent condition are unreal, and after I do that, potential buyers still act as though it's in fair condition regardless of videos, pictures, and warranties. It's almost not worth listing anything on this site.
