It's about a 2 inch piece that is cut out of the lower skeg, or as some people call it, a stump jumper. They allow more water to reach the prop, so if your prop is dialed in with you, you will get more performance out of it. If you call gatortail and ask for hoyte, he will cut you one for the XD lowers. I think I paid 75 bucks for mine. If you know someone who has one, you could also cut out that piece on your own if you didn't want to spend the 75.

Wrong. 1500 to 2000 over the price of a stock 35 gets you equivalent power to a stock 40 with an aftermarket exhaust (which is an additional 500 on top of your already 500 more). 2200 got me a stage 3 (and it still does, btw) and I had to buy my own heads and aftermarket pistons and rods because the engine I got was missing the heads, and I built compression with longer rods/shaved pistons. 1500 on a stock 35 puts you where a 40 is. Guess what. A stock 40 costs about 1300 more than a stock 35. And the briggs efi engines still have wiring harness issues. But Briggs has it right. *thumbs up*

Thank you! Can't believe that little cut will make a difference.

I didn't find it made any difference in top end, but I saw a difference in holeshot for sure

That was one of the main reasons I bought my 40. Once my warranty runs out, imma send it to nick willey and get it staged up. I got 3 years to save lol

Giga, I'm saying you can get more performance for the same money with a builder, actually if you start with a 35. If you start with the 37, it'll cost about $150 more to build compression, get an exhaust and have more power. Add a cam and you're well past what the 40 is capable of.

Barely make a season lmao

Plenty of stock efi engines with that 3 year warranty barely make a season. Plenty of those aftermarket builds make far more than a season. There are outliers on both sides. If it weren't for 2 old used starters and 1 new Briggs one (denso must've made a bad batch), my stage 3 would've made 3 seasons without issue. The starter on there now has survived more than 1. A stripped exhaust bolt and a stripped valve cover bolt have been the only issues I've had since. Smooth, maybe so, but that's not the norm. They still aren't balancing the rotating assembly from the factory.

Did you build your own motor Russ or did you have someone build it. Seems like you got some great reliability out of it.

I have no experience with the q. I like my voodoo a lot and I like the stainless works just as much. The marshmallow is another good one too bro. I would imagine the q is a good exhaust though since boss and all uses it on their products

The Q will breathe much better than stock. It won't show the gains that some of the louder exhausts do, but it won't rattle your ears nearly as bad, nor disturb the peacefulness of the outdoors as bad, either.

Has any of y'all had experience with a gutted stock? I haven't, but my buddy had one he liked a lot and said he had decent gains over stock, so he said.

Yeah you right, and they sound pretty damn good. I like the ones they made a second outlet for. Looks cool, which is what matters

$4200 is the cost of a 40 powerhead, Giga is just an old black sharpie. He's never had an engine built by a reputable builder. I can tell you this.. I fix more stock motors than anything if that tells you something. My modded engines are reliable and I take proper measure to make sure my valve train is stabile for the RPM I plan on turning.

4200? Fuck. That's more than 500 more than a 37. And trust me, I know what you build. Hence me not letting giga slide on those "facts" he likes to throw out.

Briggs is a multi billion dollar company.
I build engines as a second job, partly to satisfy my love of engine building; and to make extra money aswell. No way will I offer a 3 year warranty for any joe bubba to juts come run me into the ground. I will say I will work with said customer if there is ever an issue.
I'm also a Specialized Briggs service center aswell so my customers can get the best of both worlds.

I don’t see anything unreasonable about this. Especially considering what it’s on.

Post Re: Any 40's out there??
My current motor ran for 5 years with a stage 1 build with no problems besides a couple case gasket leaks. The builder decided to delete the gasket at no cost to me. I decided to have more work done to my engine because I wanted more power and its 5 years old and I figured it would be a good idea to have it gone through completely and also do some preventive maintenance. I now have a stage 2 build and guess what, the builder assured me that if I have any problems he will make it right. These builders don't make money if they don't stand behind their products or services. Plus a strong reliable motor that still hulls ass with a hunting load will make them more business than a motor that is broken. Briggs offers a warranty because they can afford it and when a stock motor breaks during duck season you better hope you have a Briggs warranty center that doesn't have a waiting list a mile long like most of them. Most engine builders will do everything they can to get their customers back on the water as quick as they can, especially during hunting season.
I'll take my risk with a built carb motor any day of the week.
