Post Question?
I have a prodigy 1854 with a mud buddy 37 efi, it has a stage 3 kit in it with stock prop and I'm having trouble running it, I just got the boat Friday from prodigy and it's my first mud motor. But the issue I'm having is that it catches air pockets in the water like spins out and I will Trim it all the way down and up trying to get it to grab and push. Sometimes you can just pull the trigger and it will jump up on plan but I'm never able to get it to do it multiple times, from the same position that I started from, to me it seems like I need a bigger prop or something, thanks for any help and advise

Welcome to the prop game. Bigger prop, not necessarily. More cup or pitch, adjusting the rake, larger diameter, an extra blade, all of those things work together to get a prop correct for the boat and engine.

Yep, it took me 5 props to find out what exactly was perfect for me. On a 3 blade you will need at least a 12 pitch, possibly more than that, and on a 2 blade, at least an 11. Give baggy a call, he will help you out. 985-868-0103 is his number bro

If it's your first mudmotor you may not know that the depth of the water makes a huge difference. Ideally it would be shallow but not too shallow (maybe 1.5 feet?). Deep water can definitely hurt hole shot and top speed. There's been plenty of times when I've been loaded down and couldn't get up on plane until I ran towards the bank to get into shallower water.

So why exactly does the depth of the water effect the speed of the boat? Sorry to hijack ive just been wondering as ive seen it mentioned a couple times now.

Post Re: Question?
In deep water, the water under your boat shoves water out of the way below it because it has somewhere to go. In shallow water, the ground underneath shoves back. That causes the boat to lift higher for the same speed, less drag on the boat, motor doesn't have to work as hard to achieve the same lift, and consequently, speed as in deep water. Make sense?

Unless you have a crawfish skiff....for some reason I run faster in deep water. No idea why. It doesn't make sense, but these guys are right, typically, you run faster in shallow water because of the reasons explained above.

Post Re: Question?
Next time you run shallow water and the back lifts, pay attention to how much of the front is now trying to plow water. For it to be slower, the rake of that skiff is going to be shoving water some. Then you'll know why firsthand. If it's not, then you're defying physics, and we all know mudboats do that all the time.

That's just the thing, it doesn't shove water at all. It drafts about 4 inches of water and the bow stays about a foot out of the water. I don't understand it lol

My last boat was the same way. 1744 that tended to run a little deep on the back, made 0 difference from deep to shallow. In deeper water the touch of chop helped more than going shallow. Running a shallow river up here in other boats you can feel the boat rise and fall about 2" as the depth changes

I agree. I was under the impression that he had already run it stock and got some numbers and whatnot. I know it took my a while to figure out what prop, pitch, etc worked for me, and the only way I figured it out was using different props, trying different pitches, etc until I got it dialed in. Took a couple of months and that was going test a few times a week. Don't even get me started on built in trim tabs and adjusting them just right...... :x lol

Post Re: Question?
When a stock prop feels like its spinning out on a modded engine, you need some cup or rake adjustments or more blade surface, etc to make it grab better. That's not spending money just to spend it. It's not an inaccurate recommendation. But there are multiple ways to accomplish the fix. A bigger prop isn't the right answer in some cases, nor is it wrong in some cases. If it's not biting regardless of motor trim, then prop work or a different prop is in order.

Russ is right. I was lucky though that all my friends have surface drives with different levels of mods and whatnot, so I was able to try a number of props with different cavitation, pitch, cupping, width, etc before I was able to determine what ran best on my rig. I know I talk about baggy a lot, but once nice thing about him is that if you bring him the prop and talk to him, he will explain a lot to you and help you understand what he does to your specific prop to get the results you want. He has helped me understand a lot more about how all that works with props

pitch gets you speed, but there is a price to pay... in all honesty the faster you spin a prop the faster you will go. The hull depends on what propeller you want.

I'm still trying to learn props since I had Nick work my motor, but I was actually impressed with a worked hammer Jay let me test at Caddo. The holeshot with 3 men and a cooler was amazing. It was no speed demon, but I was happy at 31.5 with that load. I liked it better than my big blade I had Baggy work.

That's the same performance I got out of my gatortail fat blade after baggy worked it. We ran 3 people and a load with a big chocolate lab included and were bumping 32 with it. Holeshot is ridiculous like that hammer

I personally would not run at 4900 all the time. That is going to be very stressful over time on your engine. 4400-4500 is optimal running range for these things without have issues down the line, IMO.
35.5 is good speed, you should be happy with that once you adjust your tabs especially
