Post subject: | Limited HP |
I have searched a number of forums and am looking for some advice. I moved and now live between 2 hunting lakes that are 10 hp limited. I currently have a tracker 1542 with pods and a 13 hp long tail. Stock the motor got me about 8 mph and with a few mods I am up to 14 mph with me and the dog. My typical hunting load is 2 guys, 4 dozen decoys, and a dog. I hunt 3 guys a few times a year as well. The typical lakes I will hunt are shallow and very weedy, but no stumps or anything hard to hit. One has a few spots that I end up running through some mud. The morning drive in the boat is 1-2 miles with about 4 miles max so I am not too worried about speed, but 10-12 mph would be nice. My question is what do I do for a motor? Will a 10 hp long tail push me anywhere? Should I go to a surface drive? Should I start with a 6.5 hp and build it to turn more RPM? Does anyone know how the DNR deals with modified motors on HP limited lakes? I like the layout and space in my boat so I hate to go down to a 14’ but with so little HP that seems like my only option. |

I would add another foot or 2 (1742) and get a 10 hp longtail. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

Russ, you think with the extra length it will carry the weight better? It seems counter intuitive to put a smaller motor on a bigger boat. |

Stay light, and yes. The longer boat will help with loads. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

A 9.9 four stroke outboard is lighter and faster than a LT or SD... X2 on a longer hull.... 18x48 is the ideal size for best speeds with loads and minimal hp.... |
