Post subject:  Sport V info? (yes I know)

Hey guys, been a while. I know the sport V is a bad subject on this site to certain folks, but I need some information. Ran across a sport V 44 for a deal that I couldn't pass up. Vertical engine which I'm use to from my PD 36 dealings, mostly all BPS bolt on items. From the website, it appears to have IM heads, BPS Q exhaust, mikuni hsr 42, K&N with outwear filter, carb cover, etc. It does however have a hydraulic cylinder for hydro steering, and I'll need to convert to tiller. Hell I'll make one, no biggy. Couple of questions:

1) I says it has high rev coils. My older stage 2 PD 36 was non CDI, so what are the high rev coil set at, 4750? higher? It does have a gov block on the shaft.

2) How do I determine the year of the sport V (2014, 2015, etc)? Are there anything stamped or markings that will let me know? PD has numbers stamped into the frame.

3) Are IM heads still a crap shoot with the port work? I plan on taking the heads off, checking valves and such and cleaning up any screw up that may arise.

4) prop? I havent owend a MB since early 2000 when the origional hyper drive came with no clutch. I assume its the big blade, looks fairly new, but not sure.

I'm in no rush to dive into this thing. Just going to go through the entire motor, lower and such and see whats going on. Funny thing is, the motor has run flawless for a while, but went to the shop for electrical issues. This is not an EFI, so there is really only about 3-5 wires that actually make this sucker run. The rest is safety items that can be bypassed in order to figure it out, (relays or micro switch, etc) very easy. I'm going to build a motor stand this evening and start diving into it.

Here is a few pics a snapped of it.

Iron mountain porting is MINIMAL, basically clean up casting lines and sometimes hog out the short turn. The valve job seats near the back cut and the remainder of the valve shrouds the seat. Most of the time I'm able to report them and correct the valve job and the customer is beyond happy. BPS has great marketing for these mods, but as a larger operation attention to the details are just not there on basic engine building. There packages are for the guy who wants to finance it all into one big ole note and everyone is happy until they have issues.

I was finally able to get it on the engine stand, but it was late so i didn't start messing with it. the block is basically same as PD, but MD has alot of additional wiring that frankly I don't need nor want. More shit to go out. So my plan is to take this thing apart and get down to the "just" of it all and chunk out what i don't need.

What is with all the rust on the motor? Come off of THE GREAT SALT LAKE or just used in the Gulf of Mexico?

I bought a 2014 3 years ago with 30 hours on it. Has over 80 hours now, runs great, but did blow an oil seal yesterday. 55 mag, runs my 1751 Prodigy @ 31mph with me, dog, decoys, and gear while pushing 4300 rpms and Raptor prop. Guess you could call Keeth @ MB to determine year made. Serial number is on the starboard side of the lower unit, directly behind the tiller handle.

You can buy a new 36hp Marine Vanguard for $1800, a new 37efi $2800. Seriously, the engine block ain't designed for all that compression, but since you are very mechanical inclined to repair such, then your thoughts on the matter will see it run another day. Myself, gonna go with a new 40efi. Have MB do it in the spring. Good luck on your project. I love the Sport V design, but SOUPING UP these engines IMHO comes with risks.

Made heavier, or redesigned so they don't have the same failure points or made to higher casting standards? Nope. They'll still have the same issues from those flaws.

So, B&S is just BS without the "&"......? Y'all know more than me.

Suggestions for prevention ofa cracked block ona mudmotor? All ears, fellas. Don't like spending $$$ on needless repairs, especially during duck season.

I just got a used block and swapped all my parts over. Starter shitting the bed caused the block issue, used block had a couple/few hundred hours on it and has been fine for the 160 hours I've put on it since the fix. It's one of the old castings, before they switched to that cheaper company or qc.

Thank you, Team Green.

Know of 3 fellas who hunt on Caddo Lake on the Texas/ Louisiana border exclusively. They swear by Pro Drive. One individual has 3,000 hours on his, and due to the stumps in that lake, they won't use any other mudmotor. That said, do believe your opinion on vertical mudmotors.

Got a quote today from MB ona new 40 efi......$3300 installed. Will use my Gatortail w/ 40hp Yamaha this season, and drive to Utah after turkey season in 2019 to get repaired.

Thanks again for your opinion......good luck with your Sport V and keep us posted on its' completion when repaired.

I know a fella that is pretty hard on his mb on caddo. I'm not a mb fanboy, but prodrive isn't the only solid frame out there. There are plenty of godevil and gatortail that spend quality time in those stumps out there too and survive.

look, anybody who tells you they put a million hours on their brand of mudmotor and says it never breaks is a liar. plain and simple. they all break from time to time, especially if you use them as intended.

only reason I say this is just to put it out there. I have no pom poms. lol

Post subject:  Re: Sport V info? (yes I know)

And you are right, though you should get some pompoms. They don't have to have a brand. Pompoms can be entertaining.
