So we were busting through ice in the middle of a big lake when my briggs 23 started acting up and quit (bad situation). I got it to fire up and it sounded like it was running on one cylinder. It only wanted to run right with prop out of water or trimmed real high. Managed to get it to the ramp but scared to take it out again. Any ideas what might be wrong?

Plug wire arcing, coil bad, intake leak, if it's a 2 barrel carb it could be a jet clogged, spark plug bad, blown head gasket, pushrod bent/loose or some other vavle related issue. Those are just few options, but there are more.

I'm sure your problem is listed above, lol. To verify your on one cylinder start engine and feel the headers to see if one stays cold. Note which side is dead then we can go from there

Ok thank you guys, I will try and replicate the problem out of water to see which cylinder might have dropped. Also have some new plugs I can put in.

Check spark before you just change things. Also, wrap the plug boots and a couple inches of the wire in electrical tape to eliminate any spark bleed.

Update. I replaced the plugs the night after posting. Ran fine out of water, put it in water and it would run ok then cut out and come back real quick. Did this for about a min or two then just started running fine. I finished out season with a few hunts and seemed to be ok. Old plugs looked pretty bad(rich), I think the carb could use some tunning but I really don’t know anything about this carb. Probably just selling and getting a 35 cause it just doesnt have the power I need anyway (also keeps pissing me off)

on 23's Ive seen a diode cause a cylinder misfire. Start simple.
