Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
What do y’all think the difference in speed and load caring ability would be between a modded Prodrive with ecotron efi gen 3 and worked prop. It’s Prodrive’s E5 mods. Don’t know specs on cam but heads are decked 30 with voodoo muffler. The GTR would be a stock 40 for a while. Maybe get a worked prop pretty quick. Right now with heavy load (1000 to 1200 lbs) I run 23. Completely empty I run 27. Always heard GTR’s we’re faster.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
You won't get an equal comparison. Coming from a guy who was a long time PD guy, you will never be as fast as a GTR. They have the ability to change pulley ratios to give them basically an overdrive gear. This allows them to use all of the power that the block will put off while staying off the coils. PD on the other hand has a set gear ratio. The only thing you can do is prop it out to help. Personally where we had our lease, a GTR is useless. You needed the Rev of the PD to get out of bad situations. There is a lot more than just speed when deciding.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
As a close friend and family member once said when talking about gatortail and prodrive "yeah the prodrive is the best in reverse, but if you don't get stuck in forward, no need for reverse". He was a modded gatortail owner and I am as well. I hunt straight mud marsh and have never been stuck. I always keep a 14 foot pushpole in my boat too. Get that gatortail, you should be happy if you are transitioning for speed purposes

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
that gen 3 was made to chew thru floton, not race other clearwater pirates. lol
most gaytortail folks have no idea of this concept. but hey, that's what makes the world go around!!
if your after speed, get the 1.5:1 lower unit. that will pick you up quite a bit speed wise and you will still have a strong reverse. will it outrun a stock 40 gt? it will in reverse. lol

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
There’s no doubt that Prodrive has the reverse. I feel like any day now PD is gonna have to come out with an instant reverse to.
I don’t have a lot of mud where I hunt. Mostly a lot of logs to cross. The PD does it with ease. I have only needed the PD reverse one time in over 4 years. Instant reverse would serve me better and would love to pick up speed. I just hate to get a new motor and have to run slow again until I can mod it.
I wish there were other motor options out there. I did speak with boss about the 75 hoss. The only thing they are waiting on is for mercury to give the ok to use their handle. They said mercury wanted to make sure the harsh conditions the motors are ran doesn’t affect reliability of their handle. Boss didn’t have an exact price yet but said it would prolly be over $16

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
Well my mind hasn’t been made up yet. As was mentioned I do like how the Prodrive drives. I have zero tiller torque. Have heard GTR can have some nasty torque. If PD does come out with instant I may go back with them just so I will have both.
Does the 1.5 lower really make that much of a difference in speed. I read on hear some folks didn’t really gain anything.

I tell everybody who ask me, go run whatever u like and make the decision based on what u like. what works for me may not work for you and 10k is a lot of money to waste on something u don't want.
ain't none of them perfect. probly 90% of the time, I miss my 90 merc. lol

Thanks for the info guys. I wasn’t intending on starting the Ford/Chevy war. Just want some opinions on how much performance I would gain or loose.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
I have given the gen 4 lower some thought. I like the new PD handle if i got a whole new motor but to do it as an upgrade the price is ridiculous. At least with a new lower I can get a hex shaft made and open my options on props. What all is involved in changing the lower.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
I think its easier than that. When I had my older PD with the oil filled lower, I considered swapping the the grease filled lower. I was told by Peck is undo the hex bolts and simply swap out the outdrive. You do not need to pull the entire the lower. I'm not sure if anything has changed, but its worth a call to see.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
Looks easy enough. Does any know where the guy named ( Craig the prop shaft guy) lives. I may try to just swap the lower over the summer but would like to ship it to him first to swap out the shaft to a hex shaft. Also are there any stock props that y’all would recommend starting with. It will prolly end with baggy working it. Right now I run a 3 blade, 14 pitch, double cupped.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
Thanks wade_660 but I found his number on here a while back. I don’t remember who posted it. Appreciate all the info. Y’all are always full of it. Info that is. Ha ha. I may just Try and keep the PD a few more years and give the industry a little more time to come up with some better engines other than the Briggs. Thanks again fellas.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
Boss doesn’t have a tiller out yet with the 75. I know bayou rentals is doing and supposed to be taking care of any warranty issues that may come up with the handle but I’m not gonna take a chance on $18,500 which is what they quoted me until more testing has been done. Boss is waiting on mercury to give the go ahead to use there handle. Until all is cleared I will not be spending that kind of money. I would like to see more with me Motos engine.

Re: Modded Prodrive vs stock GTR 40
dude, just sit back and wait for a while. all the mudmotor company's are frantically trying to find the unicorn that will separate them from the other guy. hasn't happened yet, but eventually it will.
I thought freedom outboards was gonna have a tiller 250hp out by now? lol
