Post subject:  Kohler Starter Debacle

I’ve got a Kohler CH25 the back of my duck rig, for some damn reason the starter will intermittently just kick on and continuously try to engage while the key is in the off position. This happens whether the engine is red hot or dead cold in the driveway. Currently my only way to kill it is to hit the circuit breaker.

I usually have a solid grasp on these things but this one is escaping me, I’ve cleaned all electrical connections inside and out, made new splices where things looked worn, but for some reason I can’t narrow down the issue. I’m sure it’s a short somewhere that’s making it think I’m giving a start command, but not sure where else to look.

Needless to say this makes for an entertaining/slightly hazardous situation when I’m on the water and it starts to take off on its own, cue the bill dance bloopers.

Anyone have previous experience or thoughts to share?

Paging Russ....lol

Sounds like you either have a pinched wire somewhere, ignition switch that's wigging out, or the solenoid on the starter is screwed up.

My vote is solenoid, but his other suggestions are definite possibilities. The solenoid always has power, it just gets trigger by the switch. If theres something in the solenoid shorting, then itll do exactly as you describe. The switch could be having the same issue allowing power through the wire to the solenoid.

Btw, cb: its was the 2 starters i got from you that began my misfortunes with them. And I bet you chuckle everytime a starter comes up in discussion.
