Another Oil Question
I recently switched to rotella t6 5w40. I read on here ( and other sites) it had a good amount of zddp. Around 1250 ppm if I remember correctly.
My question is would y’all recommend putting the zinc additive with that or just leave it alone. If so what is your mix ratio. I would run amsoil but i want to be able to buy off the shelf.
I wanted to stay with a 5w oil just for those 15 degree mornings.

Re: Another Oil Question
You have cat to be kitten me right meow....
Oil will be oil, briggs will be briggs.
Whether you put $100/qt oil in your engine, or $5/qt in your engine, the briggs can still blow at anytime...

Re: Another Oil Question
No chit Sherlock. I asked for recommendations not smart a** remark. You ack as if these only last a day or so. When it cost $9000 just to get a stock motor most people want to put a decent oil.
I asked a simple question and expected a simple answer. Amsoil cost a lot more than the t6 so I am nowhere near the $100 mark. Isn’t sharing info what this site is for.
There are a lot of guys on here that have some very good info but apparently your the acceptation.
With that said I do like your first remark that including the cat reference. Nice choice of words. I thought it was funny.

Re: Another Oil Question
I think the 3 in 1 oil really does best in my engine. The engine has been around longer than the frame it came on, so it must be good oil.

Re: Another Oil Question
Had over 3000 hours on my 23 go devil using 10w30 synthetic royal purple and I use the same thing on my gatortail and my 500 hp camaro, as well as my old truck. Never had any issues with it. I think the most important thing with them is keeping up with the maintenance when need be. As far as more answers for oil options, Bryce is right, if you look up the threads on oils, you will find endless answers and opinions on oil options

Re: Another Oil Question
I looked at a lot of those threads. That’s how I came up with using the rotella. Just didn’t know if I would benefit from adding the zinc additive.
As for changing the oil. I’m one of those guys that changes the oil way to often. I’m usually good for three times a year. I know it’s prolly a waste but of money but it’s cheap and let’s me sleep.
Unless someone tells me different I will probably just stick to rotella without adding the zinc additive. Like you said just keep it changed should be good enough.
I’m sure I’m overthinking this just like everyone else that has asked a similar question but it’s kinda hard to not want some pretty good oil for these high dollar engines. Thanks.

Re: Another Oil Question
Thanks Bryce Everything I’ve read about rotella is good. The t6 5w40 is what I used to run in my 6.0 powerstroke. I read a lot of folks running the 15w40 in Louisiana but I was worried it would be to thick for winter use. I’m only in north MS but we get some pretty cold morning every once and a while.
I’ll just run the t6 from now on.

Re: Another Oil Question
All those are excellent choices. I personally change my oil every 25 hours instead of the recommended 50. Some say it’s overkill but like you said, it makes me sleep at night so to speak and I don’t mind spending the extra little money over the year to know I’m taking care of my things

Re: Another Oil Question
$9000? You do realize that the "Briggs part" is a third of that, right? Haha I run Liqui Moly 5w-30, rotella good too. No need for additional zinc, you will sludge the sump with additives and kill the motor.

Re: Another Oil Question
Yea I know it’s only part of the equation but when the motor is shot you pretty much got nothing unless you spend the $4200 for a 40hp power head.
You made the point that the pump would sludge up. That has been the main reason I haven’t run any additive. I wasn’t sure of the out come so that’s the reason for the question.
I’ve never seen the internals of the engines like a lot of y’all have. I was just hoping for some first hand knowledge. Thanks.

Re: Another Oil Question
It's a basic, old flat tappet design. Get some good 5w-30 and you'll be fine.

Re: Another Oil Question
I just run decent 10-30, it isn't like these engines have a lot of spring pressure.

Re: Another Oil Question
Because it's the recommended oil for an engine designed to run 3600 rpms, and is suitable for extended runs that arent at significantly higher rpms. Will it be fine for a stock engine, yes. Will it work for modded engines, yes, but it wont be as effective with the higher heat produced by running them beyond 4k rpms and higher compression, which most people do for extended periods of time. It will be fine. Just isn't as good.

Re: Another Oil Question
I have seen oil temps in the 225-250 range on long runs in the texas heat. Conventional oil is starting to break down rapidly right in that temp range so whatever you get, I would suggest a synthetic. It doesn’t have to be changed often and it’s two quarts so I don’t mind a $20 oil change. I prefer a diesel or off road type oil that has a better zddp package, but pretty much any name brand synthetic should suffice.

Re: Another Oil Question
I bought mine last fall (40hp backwater) only ran it in weather below 40 degrees. Ran regular oil for the first three hours of use then the water froze. Changed it to Briggs synthetic 5-30 and haven’t had a chance to run it since. The first oil changed looked like crap, milky colored oil. From what I gathered there was probably condensation in the engine from the temps in the garage changing to the 15-20 degree weather outside during hunting season.
