Ran my boat last weekend. Was pullin hard in reverse backing out some sawgrass and noticed smoke coming out the clutch.

I turned the motor off and let it cool down then finished backing out. Just wondering what could be causing this and how to stop it from happening.

Your clutch was smoking because you had it in a bind. Probably had grass wrapped around the prop. The reverse on a gtr is a learning curve. Once you learn it. It works well. Nothing like a prodrive though

Change your oil for sure. Every time we run our equipment that hard, we change the fluids

Umm....no. That's not a necessary thing. Engine oil doesnt break down just because he made his reverse smoke. The engine isnt turning more rpms or experiencing more heat and breaking down the oil just because the transmission went in reverse and had grass around the prop. Don't make things more confusing.

When we run ours that hard, we at least check the fluids after, if the oil looks like it is broken down, then we change it.

Definitely not hard to do and definitely does not add any complication to anything. If he hasn’t changed the break in oil either than he really needs to change the fluids

The smoking was not that bad ass ur picture. Was very concerning tho. Just got to keep a better eye out when things get wrapped in my prop.

I am going to change my planetary gear oil, motor oil and oil filter Sunday once I get about 10 hours. I am going to drop it off at gatortail Monday to look at my clutch, clutch cover, and adjust my valves.

I saw one damn near catch fire trying to back off the bank one time... Couldn't handle the veggies, got a grass ball on the prop. Glad I don't have those problems.

Yea I really wish prodrive would just come out with instant reverse with the fpr. I’m going to get really aggravated getting out of my boat every time I go in reverse to make sure I don’t have grass on my prop.

My 37 Prodrive did give me a ton of problems tho. In one year and about 100 hours I had to change the following: 3 mufflers, skeg, 2 cavitation plate, trim relay, pull button to engage clutch, trim switch, wiring harness, momentary switch, starter.

Sometimes you just get a bad one. I've seen them all have just as many problems. Prodrive cooking some stiff up, just wait a little longer

Yea I couldn’t wait any longer. In September 2018 kp told me by July 2019 they would have instant reverse. It’s about to be 2020 and still nothing. We will see I guess.

^^^^^^^^^ you shouldn't ever have to do that. If it gets caught up. Kick it on forward and raise the prop out the water to sling it off....

PD's are still way shorter than a GTR.

Little smoke never hurts anything but it could have been worst if it was a poodrive

How many GTRs cracked the housing?

I've never cracked a lower unit. But I've cracked just about everything else on a GTR

Long story short, a PD just works better for some people, including me.
Even knowing that the GTR im running right now don't back up worth a shit, I still cuss this thing up and down everytime I put it in reverse lol

I'm SOOO glad I was able to use this GTR before I made the mistake of buying one, cause I would not be a happy camper.

Any pointers black?

Every boat is different. My old boat liked rpms around 3200 for best reverse. I ran the fat blade and big blade. Once the frame starts to wobble, flush the prop out and start reversing again

Reverse pointers? Haha, yeah, when it starts to get on plane, you can ease off the throttle in a Prodrive.

my nephew bought a new gtr rig. we went out to check it out. I was trying to backup in some mud and his motor started smoking like you are talking about. I was told on here that I had a pussy grip and that was the reason for the smoke/burning plastic. lol

I'd put my grip up against any mfer on here, that wasn't the issue. lol what i did to get back to the water was just keep digging in forward. when I got back to my skiff I went go back in the same stuff and showed him what fpr was all about. he looked at me and said ' but I don't do what you do with a mudmotor' and that my friends, is what I have learned about all this ford/chevy stuff. get whatever u want and be happy!!!

I don't understand why the OP's GTR was smoking in reverse anyway...
Its electric reverse now, no brake pads to slip, that im aware of...

I like outboards. My reverse never smoked on a Yamaha

If you have one of those pins for the gatortail that allows you to pull it out and drop the motor, allowing you to trim super low, it allows you to dig much better. I’ve never been stuck after pulling the pin even though I was super stuck before I pulled it. It definitely makes a big difference. Prodrive is still king of reverse though

You worked the clutch and brake pad hot. It happens from time to time.

That doesn't happen with a Prodrive
