 Size matters
I've noticed that most of you guys are running 15-18 ft narrow flats/jons is it the area that you run that dictate this or is it because optimal speed is easier with a smaller boat? BTW I have a LOWE husky 18 it is 84 inches wide what do you think it would take to push it thirty..

 Re: Size matters
this boat started out with a 50 yamaha jet drive and it was alright for skinny water but weeds no way so I bought a prop lower unit for it and I could hit 36 mph on a GPS with the just me in it loaded down full live well fuel etc 30mph but the problem is someone stole it THE little basterds cut it off the back of the boat right thru the transom since then I have put a 45hp merc on it and this past week It rosated on me so I live to fish for flathead catfish and duck hunt so I figured its time to step up and purchase a SD or something.

 Re: Size matters
A single mudmotor won't push a boat that size very well, I don't know if you'll get 30 out of duals either. Maybe modded duals, but man what an expense. That boat is more suited for big waters, if you want to get in the mudboat category, I don't think you'll get it with that hull.

 Re: motor Size question....
I will agree with DMD on this one. For you to get what you are used to on the numbers, you really need to get a jackplate and 60 4 stroke. No single MM will do what you expect with that large boat. What is its weight with and w/o blind? You would be better off with a traditional 4 stroke than the cost for a duel MM although you might get speeds in the low to mid 20's. Can you live with that and the $$ cost verse a 4 stroke?
Just my 2c worth...

 Re: Size matters
The problem I have with running a outboard is that I hunt alot of wild rice and outboards and weeds dont mix kinda like oil and water after seeing some of the you tube videos I think that I could live with the lower speeds but I dont think that it will be as bad as everyone thinks I maybe wrong but I have seen some big jon boats up here that run longtails and the move pretty good. I know there is a place in Minnesota that builds a custom longtails that are called the preditor based with a harly motor and stock it is around 70 hp but I think I can do better than that. I'm not sure of the weight this is another rpic of the boat not the greatest pic

 Re: Size matters
call the guys over at Gatortail and the guys at Prodrive, both companies will be able to give ya more infomation on what you are wanting to do with that big boat. they should prob be able to tell ya what it will take as far as duals or modded duals. personally i think just duals should be able to make you hit thirty, but im not an expert

 Re: Size matters
Find a buddy that likes to duck hunt. He buys the duck rig, you keep the flathead rig and yall hammer down! I went from MM to Jet (90/65) and if it don't rain soon I'm gonna be fishing from a 4-wheeler the river is so shallow.

 Re: Size matters
You said your boat width is 84" wide. Did you measure dat at da top of da gunels or da bottom of da boat?

 Re: Size matters
An 18x60 ought to run close to 30 mph with a stage 1 PD or GTR empty. Loaded down around 25-27 mph I would think.

 Re: Size matters
Just for future reference when people say the width of their boat they are talking about the bottom width of the boat
