 Narrow boats
I was wonderin if length had any effect on a boats stability?
Ive been in 14x36's before and they can be sketchy when you get to walkin around or shiftin weight in them, so I was wonderin if those of you that have run long narrow square chine mudboats with longtails (16-17 x 36-38) still feel uncomfortable when you try to fish or anything?

 Re: Narrow boats
Good question.
Anything less than 17 x 48 forget about standing up. I have a small step-down deck in the bow from where I fish standing up and its a miracle I haven't busted my ass yet.

 Re: Narrow boats
A narrow boat will be tricky just until you get used to it. I had a 1736 with a 23 lt and it was tricky til I got used to it. My boat now is 19x40 with a 35 gtr. I dont have any trouble in it but some of my buddies have problems walkin around in it.

 Re: Narrow boats
I, for now, have a 1644 and once upon a time had a 1542. I think this depends on your size. I weigh about 170 lbs and I have no problems standing up to fish.

 Re: Narrow boats
I run a 17x38 round bottom. I don't have any problems but I spend more days in a boat than not so it comes pretty natural to me. Themore time you spend in a boat the more comfortable you become.

 Re: Narrow boats
Its all about getting used to the way the boat moves. I got a 1436 and can be seen running all over it. You just gotta be carefull and watch were your stepping.

 Re: Narrow boats
Ive never been in rough water with a narrow boat, Is it a scary ride, wet ride, or does it cut through the waves?

 Re: Narrow boats
Depends on your heading and the wave direction but pretty much a white knuckle experience and don't recommend it. Boat waves are fine but big water or barge traffic is like I said not recommended.

 Re: Narrow boats
I got back in a cove one day fishin with my 1442, when I got back on the main lake there were 3-4' swells...
The stumps would look like they weren't there and when the wave passed you would get hung up on it. It was a very scary ride.

 Re: Narrow boats
What about on step under power, can you walk side to side with the motor?

 Re: Narrow boats
1542 with 18 inch sides was my first boat. Took it out in the Atlantic, did alot of night snook fishing, had a little trolling motor on the deck, no problems (have flatsboat for that now). I just kept a "bailer" handy. Only had one "almost sinking" experience. A buddy of mine caught a sailfish out of his 1448 jon. Now that I have 2 young sons I will upgade to a bigger, safer duckboat probably an 1848 with 21 inch sides.

 Re: Narrow boats
had a 1436 for awhile with my 25hp LT...i read people have done it so i figured i'd give it a try. It definitely wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. Boat was great for getting into real tight spots and manuevering out of them. its definitely pretty cool to have that small of a boat with alot of HP. But i needed a boat that i could get out on bigger water with and stepped up to 1848. The boat now is absolute barge.
