I use both. I used a bottom fed on to shoot the base color ad the smaller gravity fed gun for the pattern I was spraying.

For painting camo patterns and stuff, a small siphon touch-up gun with the flat lever on top is the most comfortable, but a quart gun (be it gravity or siphon) will be best for base coating large areas.

The touch up gun will feel like a large scale airbrush, you'll be a lot more accurate with it, especially a double action.

Gravity feed are definitely more awkward than siphon types, but still easy to use. The guns at lowes and home depot are fine for what you're doing. Hell, I've been using a home depot gun to finish woodwork for awhile now.
