 gtr on go devil boat
I just re-powered me 18x44 go devil boat with a gtr35. this is my first surface drive motor. My question is on the gd boat it seems to run heavy in the rear and there is a large amount of torque on the motor to the point it is uncomfortable to drive. Is this normal for this set-up being the boat is narrow with round chines?

did you mount your engine dead center? you can shift it away from you about an inche or two that should help with some of the torque

Re: gtr on go devil boat
it's gonna "squat" because of the rounded chines. I tried a 23 GTR on my 16x38 GD boat and it ran horribly. you can put wedges underneath or some wings on the side to help it plane out better but at dead stop it ain't gonna sit flat. Kyle wanted to put wedges on the bottom of my boat if i went with the motor but the more i though about it, that sorta defeated the purpose of having a slick bottom with rounded chines.

How old is the boat, and have you pulled the waterlogged foam out of the floor? I'm running a 36pd on a 1844 and when compared to running it on a 52" tapered chine there was only a slight difference in draft.

As others have said, I have found that load positioning with a GTR can really make a difference as to driveability.

Re: gtr on go devil boat
Thanks for the suggestions...i figured that there was an easy fix i just didn't want to screw with anything till i got some advice. As far as the foam in the bottom i have not checked it but i do know that the boat is heavy. The bottom floor is riveted down, how did u re-attach it after pulling it?

Re: gtr on go devil boat
Just drill the old rivets out with a 3/16" bit, remove the foam, and replace the rivets. I got big head replacement rivets from GD. And I have also used regular ones from Lowes or Home Depot. And they worked fine.
P.S. I put wedges on my boat and it stopped the porpoising and it rides much flatter. The times I have had to push backwards off the bank, they did not seem to hurt anything.

Re: gtr on go devil boat
Go Devil will sell you new foam and rivets for about 75.00 new the foam only weighs about 10 pounds...
Without the foam the floor will be soft and the bottom more likely to suffer longitudinal "hooks" or dents between the runners....
