Took my Boat out today with mixed results. The Boat is heavy and over built and that is exactly what I wanted. Problem I had was the Troll Motor was not a Foot Control and the Seat Base was too close to the Troll Motor. When the Troll Motor was Stored the vibration caused it to turn itself on. This is a 55# Motorguide Hand Control Bow Mount. I ordered a Foot Control.

The other problem was the 40hp GatorTail was not pushing the Boat like it should. Once I got on plane it was plenty Fast but it struggled to get on plane. It felt like the Motor was revving up with no bite in the water. This was most likely caused by the Custom Rock Guard we put on it, but I am not sure till I take it off and try it again.

The water was White Capping and the boat handled it very well. I did get soaking wet but I was surprised how well the boat took the 2ft waves and was not rough riding at all.

Now remember I have taken a Duck Hunting Boat and built it like a Tank to fish in those hard places it usually takes an Airboat to get to. Stumpjumper was one of the few that offered to put a Livewell on for me and it worked great.

I ran a GD 23 before this boat and it would throw you out taking off and this Motor seems like it is Trimmed all the way up trying to take off. Most likely the Rock Guard causing issues.

The best news is that Mike Cassell thanked me for complaining and told me he would meet me half way next week to move the seat Base on the Fishing Deck back to a better Location, Exchange the Troll Motor for a Foot Control, and figure out why the Motor was not pushing the boat better than it should. I was surprised he told me that he really needed the Feed Back to get his boats better.

At this point I am glad I did not buy one of the production boats.

When a boat feels like its spinning its wheels, you need prop work. Rock guard may be contributing to the issue, too, but that prop isnt biting well enough.

Yeah, Russ is correct. That powertech prop you have on there is garbage. Get you a merc 3 blade or a fat blade, hammer, or big blade if you go with a 2. If you stick with that powertech, you will need some cupping, sharpening, and maybe a little pitch added. What rpms are you turning st wot and what speed are you getting at wot?

It doesn't matter what prop. When it feels like it's just spinning like your tires do in mud, it needs more bite. Cup, more blade surface, rake, all have an effect on how a prop grabs water and releases it. I made a post a few weeks back on what information you need to give a good prop guy, and I highly suggest that route. If taking the rock guard off helps, so be it, but these props cant all come from the factory and be perfect for every setup. 85% of the boats with surface drives would likely benefit from some prop work. Not all of them NEED it, but there are gains off idle or too end, or load carrying, etc ro be had with getting a prop dialed in for your needs.

I can turn the hammer at 4400 at 30 no problem. All I have is a 40 with exhaust and a different air filter.

Are you basing that off of the motor he is running or the entire rig? The 40 pushes a 12 pitch prop around 4400 at optimal wot. It pushes the hammer no problem on the 40s we have ran, including mine. Just trying to figure out what can help the guy out so he can get the performance he is seeking

that rock guard has to go. that propeller is a GOOD prop for your everyday motor. It may not be the best but it should plane well and run good on top. You also need to cut the skeg to get water to the hub of the prop.

Try a big blade. I had the three blade Power Tech prop and even after having it worked I didn't like it. It was slightly faster but barely. I'd rather a better holeshot any day of the week than 1 or even 2 mph faster top end.

Marcus is right about the cut skeg. Make sure if you do get your prop worked, get your numbers with the cut skeg on the unworked prop first, because you will get different numbers running the cut skeg and the straight skeg bro

I can’t see how cutting the skeg could make a difference significant enough to justify it any aftermarket efforts unless OP does it himself. I highly doubt it makes a difference noticeable in any way aside from staring at your GPS monitoring tenths of a mph difference. The rock guard changes water flow a bit more and would make some difference, but a skeg, doubtful its significant enough for the vast majority to care not be the big issue OP has.

The cut skeg can be ordered through hoyt at gatortail for 75 bucks. The cut skeg does make a big difference if the prop is worked to complement the extra water getting to the prop. The noticeable difference for the cut skeg is in holeshot. Holeshot is very noticeable between the cut skeg and the straight skeg.

If you only drink water and eat salad for a couple weeks, your holeshot will get better. I wear a spandex suit and an aerodynamic helmet and picked up 15 RPMs.

The stupid comments are unnecessary. The op asked questions on what would help him and different options to assist him with obtaining the performance he seeks. Saying getting a prop worked (night and day difference between worked and unworked) or adding small things like a cut skeg are not worth 75 here or 90 there makes no sense if you are dropping 700 on heads and 400 on a cam. If you are willing to spend over 1000 on engine mods, why would you not spend 90 bucks to get your prop properly dialed in? That's like dropping a supercharger in a car for 5 or 6 grand and then complaining that you had to buy more aggressive rear tires for a few hundred bucks. That makes no sense to me. Do what you think works good for you. For me, the cut skeg and worked prop combo has made anywhere from a 4-5 mph difference and better holeshot. Whether this applies to everyone, I have no idea, but the stuff I post on here is to try and help people with the issues they are having with the little bit of knowledge on the subject matter that I have.

Cutting the skeg allows water to the hub of the propeller a lot better. I suggest doing it to save prop from disturbed water hitting mid blade vs from the hub throughout the tip. Any speed increase is a plus. Look at the extruded lowers they were all notched. Cast lower s can be modified aswell to streamline water to the prop in that area by grinding


Now if the op feels it slipping then Biting then hauls ass as he describes it.. I'm putting money he's trimmed too high for take off. Usually once you find best trim for max speed its too high for a holes shot just like on an outboard. bump it down a couple inches, take off, and trim back up. It sounds like you need some tiller time to get used to the setup.


the props do not go below the skeg. Just stop worrying about a propeller strike, Just run this thing. If it breaks I can warranty some work for you if its a failure on the GTR unit or the briggs.

I agree on the jokes bro, it's just hard to determine what is a joke and what is not via a message over an actual conversation, so if I mistook the comments for something other than a joke, my apologies.

The cut skeg made the most difference in holeshot for me and resulted in a 1.5 mph difference on the top end vs the straight skeg. As far as the prop work, I was able to run 31-32 with the merc 3 blade unworked and 34-36 with it worked, five or take that speed due to varying water conditions.

If you or anyone else doesn't want to buy a separate skeg like I did, I'll be more than happy to take some exact measurements and send it to you if you pm me so you can cut it on your own to save the extra cash.

I have heard that when you encounter a skunk, if you grab him by the tail and pick his hind feet off the ground, he can't squirt you!!!

Btw when running a mud motor it is different than running a Regular outboard! Get some stick/wheel time, pay with your trim, move your load around, and run it like its yours! Enjoy!!!

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'd hate to know I spent $9,000 on a motor and I needed to cut my skeg to get optimal performance from my prop.

Agreed. Regardless of the cost to the buyer, if this is significant enough for Hoyt to be marketing it, why is this not already just changed in the factory to come standard? Is there some risk to the lower they are concerned about (doubtful) so why?

OK here is a short Video of my Stumpjumper with the builder driving. I think he said he is about 180 and I am 260. Speed was 29 single and 27 with both of us.
