 Re: Going old school
Ur putting a weak link into the equation vs angling the motor with a coupling that will never give u a problem. Eventually he's gonna spin that joint, might b 50 hrs, might b 500 but it will happen

 Re: Going old school
I would have put a rubber hose like on a stuffing box. That set up has no give to it.

 Re: Going old school
I didn't notice that Rene good catch. U def need to unbolt the bearing if ur not gonna have a hose
It needs to flex somewhere r that u joint doesn't have a chance

 Re: Going old school
What y'all are failing to realize is that the u joint is your point of flex. Like I said it worked great before also thanks for all the input pops really enjoying this.

 Re: Going old school
Its to protect the shaft. You hit a log or stump the shaft only has the lil give in the cutlass bearing. It is much easier to bend a shaft like that. The coupling will come apart before motor damage though.

 Re: Going old school
Ok we could debate good an bad back an forth all day on something like this , fd I have a question for you concerning that last pic you posted , seeing that you have a coupling an a flange bearing with a rubber hose on the end for a coupling to work properly it is suppose to be lined up both vertical and horizontal . How is it being supported on the end of your shaft tube is that rubber hose lined up or is it just slid on if so you are causing undue wear somewhere in your system . Just wondering .

 Re: Going old school
To answer ur question, I aligned my motor to where the shaft is, and aligned the coupling vertically and horizontally with the motor mounts. It's at .002, that's as true as it gets. The rubber just protects the shaft in case u hit something as does the rubber motor mounts.

 Re: Going old school
As per pops "First want to thank y'all for the concerns about my running gear setup. Now I want to show y'all a picture of my neighbors setup. He has been running it for 16yrs a 14' wooden hull with a 20hp vanguard , pulls a 16' setback trawl during May season for shrimp and sets up for hunting in September . In 16yrs he's had to change the cutlass bearing once 2yrs ago. I based my designs on track records not here say , the only difference with mines is that the blocked bearing is also my stuffing box. More posts to come as we move along. Thank you"

 Re: Going old school
Yeah and the hose or hp don't mean nothing still bolted to bearing just in a different fashion.

 Re: Going old school
I've always said that if I were to ever build one of these, which I may get around to one day, I'd run a hose/pipe from the exhaust out through the transom like the big boats do - right at the water line. It would make a world of difference in both felt emissions and noise. Very nice work - very nice.

It crossed my mind how warm it was gonna get back there , also told him he needed to put the btb hydro turf on his decks and floor , think it would be a good match.

 Re: Going old school
Well what started as a great afternoon turned sour quick, when we got back to the launch I got in his boat to take it for a spin and put the GPS to it, well when I cranked it up and took off the side of his hull was gonna rub hard , so he went to push it away from the dock , next thing I know is he's bent over holding his hand. It got smashed pretty good , so we loaded everything up and now he's at the hospital getting stitches . I know accidents happen but feel it was all my fault as I was at the stick.
