Any reason you can think that rivets wouldnt work? Seem like screws inevitably work their way out and bore out the hole sooner or later...

Hate to bring this back up, but I need to mention something.

Poker, you used your dremel?
Well I started to do that also and then thought, boy if I have a drill bit that exact size, then thought about having someone at a machine shop bore out the fittings.
Then I had and idea. I took a 1" spade bit, cut the guide tip off flat.
Then slowly take the material off the sides to make it narrower. It didn't take much.
Then with a regular drill, bore the clamps in a vice. Don't push too fast or it will come out of the vice.
For the ends, cutting off the guide tip leaves you a flat end. Which when you reach bottom will cause it to stop and can't go any further.

If you have a bunch of fittings to do this works great. I did 50 fittings(enough for me and my brother's boat) in about 10 minutes. All the exact same size and not having to guess if using a dremel.

Just a thought for some of you if you decide to build your own blind.

What was used to secure the strap to the pipe. Are those snaps??

In the pictures here, it looks like they used cupped washers and screws.
I myself used some washers with a neoprene gasket on one side and 3/8" self tapping philips head screws that have a wider head. If needed I can get you the washer and screw pics.

I ordered all my fittings off of Overtons. Just got the frame done and am waiting on getting the material sewn in. I am really happy a friend pointed me to this site and this style of blind. It appears that it will be head and shoulder above any avery or cabelas blind.

Sportsman's Guide has a bunch of fittings too.

With the cutter bit on the dremel I just ran it in a few fast circles around the inside of the fitting from top to bottom on each. Nothing measured or scientific about it. The fitting is just a hair shy of going over the conduit to begin with so your not really taking much off. Just enough to keep the nylon from splitting over time from being to tight.

Loved the design when I found this thread a while ago and just built mine over the weekend. I am having trouble finding the strapping though.....I've looked at a couple fabric shops and they didn't have what I was looking for. I saw that you said you purchased your straps and buckles at Academy but I'm not sure what that is....any help would be great, thanks!

Runs about the same as most any comparable hull. 28-29, on a good day touching 30.

Here are photos of my plagiarized version of Poker's design. The emt running down both gunwales is in lieu of of drilling holes in my boat for the support straps. I tied the joints in with 1/2" emt inside, compression fittings and self tapping screws. And yes, she retrieves.

Not finished but you get the idea. The tarp was spray painted to get the sheen off.

I know this is an old post but I'm just wondering does the conduit sag in the middle when you get your blind material on being its such a long span from one end to the other and if so what do you have to do to reinforce it

Thanks

Post subject:  Re: Poker1

I am not the buildier of the blind you see here, but of a similar... Does not sag much. Depends on the size of pipe, and where (how) you use / connect joints. 1-inch will sag less, may not sag at all depending on the materil you use on blind. I used 3/4 inch pipe with two joints at the sides just before the bends down, and put 1/2-inch pipe inside the 3/4 to reinforce at the joints. drilled and bolted through both pipes. My first build I had the joint in the middle of the span and decided I would never do that again.

I used this design to build my blind, but I went with 1" square aluminum. I was too afraid the conduit would sag since the blind is about 14' long. I made a jig with some old 2X4's on my work bench to bend it, no heat needed, just bent slowly using a breaker bar inserted into the tube up to the bend point. Used cordura for the cover, and bolted it onto the pipe, then some snow fencing that I hit with some spray paint to dull it up, and added raffia grass from JStern

With some of the left over aluminum, some scrap plywood, and some old scrap garage cable, I made a dog ladder

If you search for textile_specialists or something along that line on ebay they have a ton of options for different materials/coatings, colors, and weights. I got some from them last year and was happy with it. In the future I think I will go with coated sunbrella fabric. It seems to be a better material but its more expensive.
