I looked at a new 1660 with a short transom today. I've read alot of post on this site that short transoms are not good to have because of backwash. I also noticed that the sides of the boat weren't very tall. I don't want to buy a boat that I'm going to end up sinking. Would you guys tell me what you think about this boat good or bad? |

I have a little over 370 hours on mine and have no issues at all. I hunt and freshwater and saltwater fish with mine and use poling platform and never have to worry about sinking. You might have a little water over the transom occasionally but nothing to worry about and only if you running wide open and try to slow down suddenly. I think the tall transom is needed if you have reverse but without reverse there is no issues. Boat carries a load great also. |

I have my GDSD 35 on my GD1660 and hunt and fish with it a lot, and you will get some water on a quick stop over the transom- however that is why I recommend you also put in a bilge pump. In my next boat I am staying with my GDSD35 but seriously thinking about getting a stage II Mod done, and moving to a longer boat, perhaps a GT 1860, or maybe 20x60 with a huntdeck, and more open boat with 21" sides. |

I have run both short and tall and currently run 21" sides and tall transom. I won't go back to a short sided boat with a short transom. The GD 1660 is a sweet hull and I almost bought one. |

Wind could be a bit of a downside for tall sided boats in some situations.... I am with Joe Guide on the need for a good bilge in ANY boat and I like those with a built in float switch and 2nd external switch design - makes it a non-issue if you take on a bit of water from time to time as it turns itself on - handy on rainy days too when you are off hunting.... However the GDSD 16x60 is available with standard or tall transom.... In fact I think I heard that they might be no longer offering the standard height transom soon as part of the re-design on floatation and the introduction of larger split rear pods/seats.... At least that was my understanding - PM me if you want to see a picture of the redesigned pods/seats on the 16x60 that GD sent to me.... |
