I just put a set of boyd welding floatation pod's on my 1546 waterfowler and I lost 3 mph. The pod's are mounted up from the bottom of the boat about an 1 1/2- 2 inches so they're not dragging. Am i getting cavatation under them now, that they're mounted up a bit higher then the bottom of the boat? Or is it something with my motor that it would be lifted up out of the water more now?

why did you do this?

Pods are a tricky thing, they have to be install just right to do what they are meant to do, we do not recommend them very often. What you are dealing with is pods with the wrong angle and imporoper height from the bottom of the boat. I would have them cut off and start over. They should be flush with the bottom of the boat at the front and tapered up 3/4-1" at the rear of the pod from the bottom of the boat when done correctly.

did the front bounce before you got your pods?

pods should be mounted 1/2" off bottom of boat. they are currently too high causing cavitation

I ran it again with the same load and I have the same speed now. Im really thinking of redoing them how you guys are saying but i really dont want to cut them off and halfta pay to weld them back on again. Do you think i would gain any speed by mounting them flush? If not im going to leave them how they are.

It should helps, if you can get someone to plate over them to make them flush with a rise to the rear that would save you cutting them off and starting over, but not seeing them as they are I am not sure if that is an option for you.

Just take another piece of aluminum, start it at the bottom of the transom and bring it up to the rear of the pod. Cut out some angles and weld the sides on. Should work a lot better than what you have now. You may even weld a small piece on the rear to bring the back down a tad. The rear of the pod should be about 3/4" to 1" higher than the bottom of the transom.

If built properly and installed for the right reason they work well. We had a boat that squatted really bad in the rear, horrible backwash even when being carefull, and a dog to get on plane. Lost the fpr with the pd, but didn't lose any turning radius. Jumps up on plane now, and no more backwash. They are tapered up right around an inch in the back. Once you get up on plane, the pods are almost completely out of the water, unless the boat is really loaded down.
