FYI...... A Bateau is a shallow-draft, flat-bottomed boat which was used extensively across North America, especially in the colonial period and in the fur trade. It was traditionally pointed at both ends but came in a wide variety of sizes. The name derives from the French word, bateau, which is simply the word for boat and the plural, bateaux, follows the French, an unusual construction for an English plural. In the southern United States, the term is still used to refer to flat-bottomed boats, including those elsewhere called jon boats. |

If you have to ask, don't buy a skiff unless you value your life very little. |

Trust me you dont need a skiff. I ran one for years and gave it up when I quit crawfishing. If you know what you are doing you should not have a problem, but if you dont you will hurt yourself. If you have to ask this question you dont need one |

The driver. There's no difference. Except a narrower bottom towards the bow |

Doesn't the amount of rake make a skiff dangerous? Less rake tends ot dig the water more than one with more rake. Right? Big skiffs with alot of rake tend to be OK. That is if you know how to drive them. For the record, I grew up in the Bell River/Pierre Part area and drove many different skiffs. Never have been thrown out of one. But was taught how to drive them from an early age. |
