measuring the length of a boat
ok, ive been goin crazy worryin about my 14x44 holding a 35 gdsd, then out of curiosity i pulled a tape from the transom to the tip of the bow and it measures 15'2". wtf? the boat is registered as a 14. so i went on godevils website because i knew they had cad drawings of their boats, and what do you know- a 16 footer is exactly that-16 foot. (according to cad drawings). so what im getting at is actually my boat is only 10" shorter than one of the most popular gd boats-16x44. so now im jus gonna say fu(k it and slap it on the back and see what it does. i guess what im wanting to know is- do all manufacturers measure from different points on a boat to determine their length?

Re: measuring the length of a boat
Most boats are measured at the water line when at rest. You measured overall length.

Re: measuring the length of a boat
A boat is overall length. So, if you have a fan tail, you pull off of it to the tip of bow.
That water line comment is just straight up STUPID.

Re: measuring the length of a boat
Weld a 10" peice of flatbar to the bow and you will have a 16x44....
if you have a 16 foot boat with a 4 foot rake and a 18 ft boat with a 6 ft rake you have the same amount of surface area on the bottom.
the 14ft measurment would prolly be if your boat was flat fronted, your pointed bow prolly adds 14"

Re: measuring the length of a boat
Your boat is measured from the stern to the front of the bow. Autogate, you have a 15' boat, they aren't that uncommon of a size. Congrats, it's bigger than you thought.

Re: measuring the length of a boat
Overall length means nothing; gives one no sense of vessel's attributes. Bow rake alone can vary the overall length of a small boat by 2 feet or more. So two boats with the same overall length might have drastically different draft, planning and load carrying characteristics. So the OL is meaningless.

Re: measuring the length of a boat
This is not controversial! Boat manufacturers have for a long time used OL to stretch the lengths of their vessel in a deceptive way. LWL (length at water line) plus type of hull (displacement, planning, multichine, round, etc) use to be the standard way to describe a vessel. I'm not saying LWL it's not a way to describe a vessel; its just a bad way. I should have been more specific in my initial post. Sorry.
