Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
Looks like Gator Tail boats have a square chine. Is that correct?
Most other mud boats have a round or tapered chine. I've never had a boat with a rounded or tapered chine...does it really make a difference?

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
The basic gatortail boat is a square. The extreme is tapered. What you choose should be determined by the conditions you run. Post up where you run and people will be able to help you more

Actually the extreme is a stepped chine.

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
FYI...I hunt most all areas in LA and MS...mud, timber, cypress lakes...etc.
I know the theory is round chine works well in stumpy areas and across mud and allows the boat to more easily get unstuck, but how much does it really make a difference when put to the test? Also does the round chine get beat up more? Looks like it would easily deform kind of like the side of an aluminum can.

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
Round chine ~ drafts more water and does not do well carrying a load, but handles turns great in water (will still slide in mud and extreamly shallow water)
Square chine ~ drafts the least amount of water and handles a load the best, but slides the worst in turns (once you learn to let off the throttle before you turn it ainht dat bad)
Tappered chine ~ is a good happy median between square and round chine
Stepped chine ~ seems to have the best of both worlds.
*** Round chine does not benefit any in a "stumpy enviroment". Anyone who believes otherwise should not be giving advise on boats.

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
The amount of water that round chines draft when compared to a square chine is negligible...that's been proved right here on this site via mathematical formula...
Round chines also slide off cypress knees and stumps effortlessly and more easily than square chine boats...thats a matte of having a basic understanding of physics and a little common sense to boot...
Try em both and decide for yourself...

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
Just my opinion but........................only time you need round chines would be running dry ground/marsh. I mean, have you ever seen a square chine airboat? I dont think it would make that much difference on a mudmotor hull or outboard hull.

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
You buying I'm listening... I've ridden in and driven both...I can not honestly say that I noticed any difference in performance from one to the next other than what I said previously...round chine boats handle the cypress knees and stumps better than the square chine rigs on the trails that I use for duck hunting in the timber....

Re: Gator Tail Boats Question (square or rounded chine?)
A round chine will only help on knees and stumps it you hit it on the outside 2 inches or so of your hull. Other than that it is all flat so it will be the same. A round chine isnt going to magically slide off a knee on anything but the very edge of the hull.
Also i dont no anything about physics, but i agree with quackconsumer. If you watch a round and a square of the same size and same load next to each other you can dell a noticeable difference in draft when at speed.
