Post subject:  Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

I have been searching the post on these and my main question is how is this stuff holding up. We run over alot of sticks, beaver damns and alot of hard sand flats or real gritty mud and i wanna know if this stuff is gunna chip off after a few times out. Also which one seems to be the better product. It seems frog spit is slicker but is it as tough as the steel flex. Just wanting some oppinions on it. Thanks

So far thelook like it will , will let u know g2 wears like paint so worse case it will have to be redone but won't hurt performance

And I drive a pd and approve this message

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

it works great but if your a mud is gritty it will wear off in a season
we run salton sea and the mud down here is bad juju for any type of coating
so what we have done is used a teflon excelerator paint does just as good and a third of the price and it lasts a season just like the epoxy

im running steel flex on my 15/54 allweld and its working great. seems to be holding up well and man this stuff is slick. DO NOT TAKE BOW LINE LOOSE before boat is in the water. it will DUMP OFF IN THE RAMP. I have 4/ 8ft carpeted bunks on my trailer and can push my boat back and forth with 1 hand, flat and dry. I HAD TO GRAB MINE AND HOLD ON to keep it on the trailer. AND i run a mud buddy 23 LA special and I approve this message

Merterman. How do you like the GatorGlide G2?
Is it easy to work with?
Did you have to flip your boat?
Is it slick or what?

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

so far love it
real easy just be ready to roll dry roll last coat to bring out the slick
nope lifted it up and rolled it on
damn slick , let it cure for 5 days it gets super hard could not chip it with a knife on the eadge

Gator glide G2 is the shit! They are great people. They make a g2 and a g4. The g2 is a little more slick then the g4 but the g4 is more cut resistant. I run the g2 and it bad ass

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

oh yea, I used the steel flex which must be about the same as all the rest. the ONLY DRAWBACK I found is keeping it on the trailer. now all my buddies are scared to put it on scared they will forget and dump it off. I added a short rope with a hook and leave it on till its in the water, just as a safety. Curious as to how well frog spit gator glide and steel flex are gonna hold up in comparison to each other. im sure they are all slick, but how durable?

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

well the gator has about 12 hrs of running mostly cattails and saw grass a few stump hit and so far damn stuff looks like i just put it on .

You can give that steal flex a light sand, wipe with acetone and paint the GatorGlide right over the steel flex. That’s what I did and at least twice as slick.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

Really. Im just hearing about that stuff recently. Must be pretty new. Anything helps. Bare aluminum can be pretty sticky at times. Might have to try out that g2.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

I've gone thru two coats of Frog spit in the last 8 years or so and I was able to get 2 to 4 seasons out of both of them. I'm not sure if they make it any more or if you can find it anywhere. The last time I looked I was unable to find. It can be tricky to put on as it comes with a hardener and it tends to dictate the working time. Add to much and it sets up quick. The air temp also have an affect on cure time. If you put it on alluminum you want to make sure you rough up the surface really good with about 40 grit sand paper or coarser. also you want to put it on fairly thick so it will wear better. If you are just running over vegetation it should many several seasons. We hunt places where you have to pull over levy slides or rollers and these can tend to chip it. As far as a comparison I'm not sure about the other brands but Frog spit is slick and you really have to watch when you launch because the boat will slide right off the trailer.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

if all are that slick on the trailer, they probably all work well. durability is the question. steel flex seems to be holding up well for me, and I run the upper and lower santee in SC we dont seem to have a stump shortage at this time, but Ill keep yall informed lol. and PLENTY OF SANDBARS TOO.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

I have the GatorGlide over steel flex. Real easy to put on. The only place it’s chipped off is where the steel flex chipped off all the way to the aluminum. The GatorGlide is way slick...

Just curious are any of these coatins anti-foulin? I'd like to keep my rig in the cooley , or at least halfup on the bank and half in the water. seems like a mud boat and bottom paint wouldn't really go well together, but there must be some others on here who keep their boats in the water all the time.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

Gatorglide.com is coming out with a anti- fouling saltwater speed coat, hopefully by October. It's still in testing stages at an independent lab and a University. It's doesn't use poison that loses its potency but creates a surface that so hard and slick the growths wash off with the force of the water as the boat moves. It will reduce friction and should increase RPM, speed and reduce fuel consumption. we'll see

Has anyone heard of putting either of the three on the bottom of a regular boat with an outboard on the back? I have a G3 with a 70hp on the back and its a pain to get off the trailer at times and was just looking for some added protection.

Post subject:  Re: Steel Flex/Frog Spit???

should be fine on any boat, it sure wont hurt to try, but remember to keep rope attached until its in the water, or it will be in the ramp. seriously.
