 Re: first boat
You run any open water?
Folks prefer a skiff for timber hunting, but they can be dangerous for crossing open/rough water. You wanna stay at 18' length for 3 guys, you'll need the room. 48" wide bottom is a good width for timber hunting, but I'd go 54" bottom if it isn't too tight where you're gonna be.
As far as a motor, take your pick. Longtail or Surface drive, reverse, no reverse, no neutral, depends on what you want and what you want to spend.
You'll want a 35hp motor for a boat that size though.

A 16' and a 23LT might be all he needs

 Re: first boat
It's getting rough in here with all the boat building competition. It's almost humorous to see who's gonna beat who to the newbies.
