being a mud motor newbie, and trying to do some research on which would be best for me and my uses, I have a question or three.

How many different types of mud motors are there? not just brands, but specific types. surface drives, long tail, short tail? and what do each of these look like and what specific applications are best suited for each.

I'm kind of leaning towards the type that is most similar to an outboard in appearance, but what type is that?

Surface drives.......If you want the best go with Gator Tail or Pro-drive period end of story. You need to test drive the two to see which one suits you. These two are the only ones with reverse!!!!!!!!!!!!!

surface drive, ok.

so basically my boat should be able to run in the same water depth it floats?

Yes but a soft bottom is best and you will be able to run shallower with a softer botttom. Hard sand does nothing but stop you dry and wear down your prop.

The dealers can schedule a test run and you can check them out for yourself.

damn, looking at both of their web sites, they show videos of running in wet dirt.........lol

thanks for the help.

how does the horse power on a mud motor compare with the horse power of an outboard?

Very different. I'm guessing a 35hp MM is about the equivalent of a 25 outboard speed wise. If you can swingg it get the 35hp.

They have some nice used ones for sale on the site. You should check them out. It will save you a lot of cash buying used. More used boats will be available after the season.

You can defiantly run a 35. You most likely will need to weight that long mf'er towards the rear. That way you have the least amount of boat in the water

The ratchet reverse of the Prodrive works better IMO. It puts more water under the boat causing lift. Also if you shave the skeg on a pd it helps with hard bottom
