Post Hybrid/V-rake with flat bottom
Posts seem to indicate that people like their true flat bottom with V-rake (hybrid, Mod-V front ONLY). Boats Like Gator Trax Hybrid or Excel Shallow water (seen Phowler and Uncle-J building them too).

Anyone out there regret getting this type of hull? If so, why?

Any disadvantages besides extra cost?

I know you'll love one if you run timber or big water.

Gator-Tail I believe made one too.

If I get another boat it will have a mod-v with flat bottom excellent design.

Thanks, for that link, WestEnd! Seems to confirm people like those V-Rake fronts.

Unless I hear from people that are disappointed with hulls they run built like this, I'm thinking this would be the way to go?

My request was the one with the hybrid rake and all the pencil scratchings. That one must be somewhere like #9 or something.

The main disadvantage I see is that it adds length to the boat without increasing the usable space.

Tossing around the idea of the mod-v rake on my next boat. From what I've read it seems like everyone likes them. Does anyone know how they do with going over obstacles? What I've watched in some videos it seems as though the boat usually goes to one side or the other. Probably not that big of deal. The pros seem to far outweigh the cons, if there are any at all.

Post Re: Hybrid/V-rake with flat bottom
I've been extremely happy with my 1960 phowler that has the mod v front before the rake. I picked it up the beginning of April this year and am averaging about once a week on the water with it, more when it was warmer. I finally parked it until spring ice out after my normal put in spot on the river iced in a week and a half ago. The river opened back up, but ducks are closed, my traps are pulled, and it is dark when I get off work.

I've deflected off of a handful of solid, semi-submerged items without riding up on them, but I'm not sure how much different the outcome would have been with a full flat bottom. It seems like I bounced to the side instead of riding up onto debris and the redirection kept me moving forward rather than grounded. Maybe that is my perception because I subconsciously want to justify having the features that all the "cool kids" have. I do like the pointed front, even though my deflections thus far have been at or just above water level. I don't know much about mud, as most of the river I am on is a hard sand bottom. The angle up front at the crease doesn't seem to be getting too beat up in the time I've been running it. I've been happy with performance in heavily whitecapped water, although I have never felt the need to go out into the really big, deep vee boat rough type water and have no desire to test boundaries on a boat I purchased for the river and marsh.

One thing I can say about this purchase is that it is one of the first in my life that if I had to do it all over again knowing what I know after the fact, I would not do anything differently. I really, really like my boat. The mod-vee added a chunk of change up front, but I have felt it was money well spent.

Off topic: Actually, I would do one thing differently, but not with the construction of the boat. Phowler's spud poles are hollow to save weight. Within a few months of use in rough conditions/heavy current I managed to bend them both. After trying pvc I decided to go heavy and put a point on solid aluminum rod. While the weight is a little more, I'm not going to ever bend them. If one goes to the bottom, I'll run down to State Steel and spend $45 on a new rod then put a point on it.

My Excel had the flat bottom and modified, but the boat performed so poorly with a surface drive that I got rid of it. I think its because the weight of the boat was too much, not because of the style.

It was an ice breaking machine because of the modified V and weight.

Love mine on Gator Trax boat with .190 gauge. Yes spray does come front of boat with white caps and 30MPH winds in your face. I don't know of any boat that won't put spray in those conditions. Does great in mud but will slide sideways (expected in shallow water and mud). Will break the white caps at slow speeds. 1754, .190, gauge hybrid v rake, 12" catwalks both sides, huntdeck, 5 man load, 5 dozen decoys, 2 20 pound propane bottles with heaters, chairs, BACON and EGGS, GTR35 with delta stage 3, Hammer prop, and run 23 mph with that load.

My 1854 Mod-V has a re-Inforced angle welded. Within reason stumps and ice are no problem. Works as a good spray shield but like MN-Gunner said on plane not as noticeable. I have no loss of space because of the extended deck. The gas tank , trolling battery and tackle boxes are all under the front deck.

what degree rise/v rake are everyone building hulls with? contemplating having a hull made and wondering what works for everyone.

I have a flat bottom with a mod v front. I do not see any difference in the mud but it is a huge difference when running in a chop. I am glad I went with it
