The weather was rather rough this weekend on the lake. Add in the boats and the waves got crazy. My boat was tied to dock and started taking on water bad. I have a 1748 Geaux Custom and was curious about welding on pods for more floatation. Can it be done?

yes, but you'd be happier with a huntdeck added on than just 2 pods. Would also perform better than the pods would.

Mack, pods are worthless with a surface drive. They break up the water flow coming from the bottom of the boat way too bad. Look at getting a hunt deck if you want more floatation.

i have a buddy thats wants to do something similar. hes got a 1548 smooth bottom flat he recently re powered. he was looking to get a 27 but wound up with a 35. the boat rides kinda heavy in the back so he was talkin about pods. but i would imagine that would greatly reduce the turning capabilities. i came up with this.. have a box made in the back, the full width of the boat, either foam filled (not a fan bc of wasted space) or fully welded with a lid that seals real good so it would function as storage and an air pocket to help float the back. Ya think that could work?

Who were you gonna get to add the pods? If they can build pods, they should be able to build the hunt deck.

ok now this is something ive been pondering how is a hunt deck gonna provide more flotation since you are still putting the motor on the rear isn't it just like making the boat longer ??? i thought the point of pods was to put floatation past the transom and float the rear higher least thats how it works on my boat

In the case of the original post, the huntdeck would add some length to his boat, which is too short for the motor he bought.

As for the pods, they're designed to add flotation around an OUTBOARD motor, to help enable it to take off in shallow water. They're not designed for running performance, strictly for take off.

As for a huntdeck not helping with bouyancy, take a short transom boat, go from wide open throttle to stop & see how much water comes over the transom & into the boat. Now take a short transom boat with a huntdeack & do the same thing. After you've done this personally, come back & say it's just a gimmick & does nothing to help. I've seen the difference 1st hand. Are they a necessity, no, but neither is reverse & neutral, but we have that too.

I here a lot that pods don't help with a surface drive. I like mine on an 1854 gd, the let me get on plane at low speed and slide over the stumps easier. They also prevent any wave crash over the transom I rough water or loading at the ramp. They only took 1 mph of top speed but I don't have that long of runs

I have a beavertail boat with float pods they look cool and they help offset the weight of a heavy motor the insides of mine are cut at an angle so they dont limit how far my motor turns. The only hunt deck i ever saw was hollow and the dude had his batterys and gas tank in it so it would not help with floatation. Float pods make for a better platform to do repairs on the water than a hunt deck because they extend out beside the motor as far as loosing performance i couldnt tell you i always had them and think they are badass.

IMO for the floatation advantages of a hunt deck it must be sealed airtight or foam filled. without that it could still offer some benefits tho bc your adding surface area which decreases your loads psi among other things.

Foam does NOT make a boat draft less water.

The ONLY reason pods or a huntdeck make a boat draft less water is because of increased surface area.

Huntdeck. It will keep water from comming in your boat.
