Post layout with hd
I need your help. i am thinking about getting a layout boat, either four rivers or a momarsh. i like the momarsh a little better but not sure if you could mount a hyper the way the trans sits. dixie mudmotors makes a 6.5 hd. does anybody know if you can or not put a hyper on either of these boats?

I've got a 2hp honda on my Momarsh Fatboy DP. It will roll along at the equivalent of a brisk walking pace, so it should really move with 6hp. You would not want to hit anything going that fast! Momarsh and Mudbuddy's websites picture them with longtails, but I've never seen one with a HD. I think you would need to be sure the dog and the decoys were way up front before adding the weight of a HD right at the transom. The longtail shifts the weight forward of the transom and moves the operator forward as well, which I believe would be preferable.

Fowl Dawg,

I would definitley give Ben at Dixie a call to discuss the options that you are talking about, 478-952-5340. I've got both the MoMarsh and the Refuge Runner and will probably be mounting the 6.5 SD motor on the RR. I do know that Ben has a few new options in the works for these mud motors on these style of layout boats.

The 6.5SD DMM is weighing in right around the mid 60's so the weight is managable.

The new EBADS boat that Four Rivers is offering is definitely a game changer for the smaller SD builders.

Looks like if he abruptly chopped the throttle in skinny water the wake would walk right into the cockpit before the boat could level out. Right now I'm leaning towards a long tail for my DP. I think that the combination of shifting the weight a bit farther forward coupled with a motor that will not generate so much bow rise may be a bit safer combination.

A tab system that would generate some stern lift and push the bow over might be an option as well. It would have to be a fixed tab setup and it might be prone to hanging up.

I got a Momarsh Fatboy DP. I run a 58 lb thrust MinnKota and it will scoot
I have seen one with a long tail Robin engine and it ran about the same as when I was on high speed. Difference is that he could go anywhere without getting stuck and I could go most places. I don't think you would want the weight of a HD on either of the boats you mentioned. A long tail or outboard up to 5 HP will easily work.

I had a 14x32 with a 30lb trolling motor and it would go anywhere the boat could float as fast as I needed to go. It beats paddling!

Sure does Woddie. I also use a push pole and it is probably the best way to get around in my layout in the super shallow water. Anything beats paddeling.
