Based upon your other post WTB 23/27 LT....

Here is my opinion on round versus square...
Assuming you wanna go 20mph solo and 18mph double...

A GoDevil 18x38 round chine was designed to get the most speed with
the 20hp class motor with a load - the round and narrow design "cuts"
through the water and veggies - also turns sharper without sliding

A square chine - would float shallower - but slide significantly in the
turns at WOT - advantage would be over rocks, oyster beds or sand bars

A third choice is available in the tapered chine like the GoDevil 16x48
which is a hybrid that slides a little at WOT but floats shallower than
the round chine

For that motor IMO the GD 18x38 or the GDSD 16x48 would be the two
designs to compare and choose from - they both have ample floatation too
in case "stuff happens" - that is my opinion anyway

i have a 16 ft. go-devil boat w/ round chimes. i want a rig to go in the swamp by my house. i want to put a 23 on it. do you think this would make a good combination? i am not sure if mine are tapered. they look rounded to me.

A square chine can do everything a round chine can and then some. The argument of sliding in turns becomes a mute point with a little stick time and the average owner will NEVER be running fast enough for it to be a concern anyway. We talking lawn mower engines running on average 25-28 mph for the biggest stock motors out right now. The only advantage I see for a round chine argument is if your having to push the boat to turn it around. But I have FPR so what do I know????????

I've run square and double tapered. The square sits alot higher in the water. I was concerned about the sliding aspect as well, but it is no big deal. You just got to learn to drive it, thats all. I guess I'm not in situations that often where I need to be WOT making a turn. I would never go back to a double taper or round now that I have a square.

CHINES

A square chine boat can be turned no problem with stick time...(wider boats are the worst) but anybody should be able to run a square chine boat 40" bottom or less and turn with no problems

You aint gonna be runnin fast enough with a 23 LT anyway to have to worry bout sliding but you'll like a sqaure chine for low speed/idling turns better with a longtail anyways

not sayin you cant turn a round chine at slow speeds just alot easier to turn a sqaure chine at low speeds and it stay true

I run a 18x60 Go Devil Surface Drive boat w/ a 35hp Surface Drive. The only difference that is noticable is in deeper water. The round chine will roll up a little more but does not go quite as fast. The square chine boats will get a couple of mph over the round chines. The square chiine also seem to sit a little higher in the water. If it means anything, I've got 29.5 mph on my GPS with just me and my girlfriend in the boat. Go Devil said it should not go that fast, but the GPS doesn't lie. Most of the time it runs in the mid 20's...
