Ive never owned a mud motor and I'm buying a Lowe 1652 roughneck(welded) and was wondering what size mud motor would fit it best????

I have the chance to buy a 2010 27hp Mud Buddy surface drive, would this be a good choice for this boat???

here is the boat

Thank you
TM

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that by the end of this thread, there's a riot. The loudest of those "rioters" will be telling you to put a 35 GTR on it...

GO!

My GTR pom poms aside, I wouldn't put that 27 on it. Been there, done that, that motor sucks.

Just buy one motor one time and be done with it

It will save you in the long run

Buy what you want who gives a shit.....Buy you a short transom GTR and be done with it, a 23hp gtr will outperform a 27mudbuddy any day of the week

Even a 23 MB will outperform a 27 MB

The vertical 27 Kohler has plenty of torque for a PD, but the horizontal sucks eggs. My 1st sd was a 27 MB & it SUCKED!!! Had a friend with a 23 on 1442 with 3 people that could run circles around me in a 1548 with 2 people. Got another friend with a 27 MB on an Excel & it also sucks. Just not enough torque.

Rob,Do u think it had something 2 do with gear ratio?
27 mb 1:1.389
27 pd 1:1.5

Probably so, but like I said a 27 MB sucks

The 31 MB in my opinion isnt much better eather, ive worked on one and run one that is slow to get up on a plain and once up with drop off fast with any sized load.

35 mudbuddy man screw a gator tail it's blown out of proportion ive personally seen a 35 gator not hang with a 35 mudbuddy on identical boats

Maybe you already know or maybe you don't, but no mud motor is going to perform to its full potential on that boat. Not to say it won't work, you just won't get the performance intended from the motor. Mud motors are built for mud boats. It looks as if there are ribs on the bottom of that boat...if you plan to run a lot of mud, those ribs will cause problems. That being said, if you are still intent on buying said boat, get a GT or PD.

It would probably work fine, I put my 27 on my 1548 ribbed bottom boat and it ran great with 2/3 people. now 4 people becomes a little too much...

I wasn't pushing a GT, I was warning to stay away from the 27 MB. As for as the comment above, there's more to that story that you're leaving out. Mods? Loads? Engine conditions? Prop conditions? Operator experience?
