Post Building up 16" transom to 20"
Buying a longshaft 27 Prodrive from a buddy. His boat has a 20" transom and mine is a 16". I talked to Prodrive and the fellow told me to just weld a 4" tall piece of aluminum channel across the back of the transom to make it a 20" transom, said they do it all the time in their shop for customers boats.

I am just curious to see if anyone on here has done that and have any photos or tips from doing it. I tried to search on here for it, but never turned up anything like what I am looking for.

Thanks!

Mostly depends on what boat it is and if its already reinforced enough for a mud motor.

You could simply put a 4" piece and weld it but without moving the corner gussets all the torque is on the new piece and welds.

Its a 2004 Weldbuilt 1648, 0.80" welded hull. Good transom with good factory welded bracing. Has ran a 27hp longtail and 25hp outboard with zero issue.

The bracing is what my question is geared toward. I am going to have to get someone to weld it for me and I want to have it done correctly and I want it to last. Advice appreciated.

The boat can Handel it don't let just anyone weld it for you find a Fabricator that knows what it will take to hold up and last

Those boats do have a pretty sharp transom angle don't they!

How much water does your weldbuilt draft with the PD on the back? What speeds do you get?

THanks!!

That was deep water. Shallow it would bump 25 with the light load

Post Re: Building up 16" transom to 20"
Motor installed! I have about 4 hours of run time on the motor now and I think it performs great on the 16' transom! How to I tell if this is a tall transom motor or short? After running it I am pretty sure this is a short transom motor. But I do have the same issue as "boatbender". The transom angle on the weldbuilt boats is very steep and I need to shim the trim someway. Thought about calling Prodrive and see if they sell a larger trim roller wheel. Any other ideas?

Speeds: 25mph deep water, light load. - 20mph with two men and normal gear, deep water - 16mph with 4 men, loaded to the gills, blind installed, deep water.
