I see an opportunity to help someone here. I certainly understand your concern for proximity and I will be the first to tell you I have not seen the first custom boat from up north so I cannot say anything about them. I will say though, give some these guys in south LA and east TX a look. They build a damn fine rig.

give the boys at Phowler a call I have one of there 1856's and love it. Had mine built to my spec. was done in about 5 weeks.

I am a fan of Phowler and they are in your back yard. There are fine boats coming out of LA and TX as well. The distance does not affect your build. Most reputable builders will consult with you repeatedly before they make the first weld AND keep you up to date with photos along the way. However, the trip to pick the boat up, or the cost to ship it can be a considerable inconvenience or expense.

mine was a little less than that because i had the commercial hull built. I also left out one of the pod seats and had storage hatches put in the one pod seat and front deck.

I'm in your area (SE MN) and I went to Muddy Waters Outdoors in LaCrosse, WI. I ended up getting a Gator Trax and couldn't be happier!

Thanks for all the feedback fellas. Is the custom boat worth the extra $$$? SW Marine has a1852 Alweld mud for just under $5k.
Ha2...you've got a great looking rig. Damn near exactly what I'd want to start with. Only difference is I want 2 huge boxes fabricated with removable lids to double as decoy storage (lids off) and a huge casting deck (lids on). What does extra floatation and commercial mean? I'm in Dubuque, not sure if that's anywhere close to you? How do you like that pro drive? I've been debating between pd and gtr. What kind of speeds do you get?

Spend the money on the right boat the first time. Yes the extra cost is worth it, the end result is a better built, longer lasting boat built specifically for a mud motor instead of an outboard. Phowler will build your boat however you want it.

I have a comercial hull which is a boat with no flotation. thats just kinda a joke. I'm just about an hour north of you. I like my pd never ran a gt but would like the instant reverse. If your in Dubque your about as close to phowlers shop as you are me run down there and check it out sometime. Thats what I did one day gave me a tour of the shop and all.

The custom hulls are not always more expensive, I actually saved money going the custom route.

Yeah I am being very cautious and researching I mentioned him to see if anyone has heard or used. I'm set on uncle j or phowler just depends on price gap I guess  I will be giving them both a call. id like a set up like Ha2 's boat pictured above. But a 1748 huntdeck and custom grab bar equipped with a miller lite holder

I live in iowa and went with an uncle j. Even with the cost of the trip it was close to what i would have paid for a phowler. Plus i got to see LA which i had never seen before. I like my boat and wouldnt change a thing on it. Im sure phowler builds a great boat too it all depends on what you want.

riverratdm has a good point. If i would have know that maybe i would have went with an uncle j boat theyve always looked good from the pics i've seen. my phowler was my 1st mud rig but probally not my last. i drew up many designs in the year i waited to save up the cash and there's still things i's change. my boat would probally be perfect if i quite coming on this dam site.

I live in Nebraska, so I really understand your thoughts on proximity to the dealer... I've bought a boat before from SW Marine and they are great to deal with, but I ended up going with Brother Boat this time. I just wasn't happy with a "stock boat" layout so I went with the custom. It wasn't really more expensive, except for a few "nice to have" things I added last minute.
I looked at a lot of boat builders down south and most of them are more than willing to accomodate working with someone remotely. My only issue with getting a boat built is the wait time to get it... I don't think I'll ever buy another stock boat.
Custom was the better choice for me.

Got the tour from the folks at Phowler. Very impressed. They spent over 2 hours with me on a very busy Saturday morning and answered absolutely all of my questions.
So now the debate is 1856 or 1860?
Definitely going with their mod-v.

i want a boat thats a perfect size match for a 35 surface drive. the smallest possible and it still be balanced right with that 240lb motor hanging off the back. just want to have plenty of power instead of not enough. im thinking 17x48 or 18x48 correct me if im wrong
