how many of you run a riveted hull with a surface drive? I was looking to purchase a geaux custom boat but they are booked thru the year. in place of that, i can purchase a used 2007 mod-v 1546 all welded alumacraft for a good deal or just pick up a new 1648 open hull riveted alumacraft. if i go with either of those, i'll likely need some pods since i'm looking to put a 40 kohler on the back of it. i wan't to do things right but i don't feel like spending the money if i can't get what i want. instead, i'm trying to find a good weight to horsepower ratio that will work well for a season or two and then be able to put that motor on a custom boat later. Do you think a shallow mod-v alumacraft will work silt shallows (4-12")? |

With a riveted hull, a year or two is exactly what you would get- if you baby it. Why not go with one of the other "custom shops"? I dont think Geaux has any substantially unique design that cant be had elsewhere. I doubt GT, PD, Aucoin, Brother breaux, or Phowler, etc are all booked up for the rest of the year. Oh, dont forget GD either. I thought Mormons and other Ute's were Excel loyalists anyway. ![]() ![]() |

do you know if any of those custom shops have regular shipments up this way? It'd be nice to not have to give up my firstborn on shipping costs. |

i had a 14ft riveted alumacraft with a 24hp honda long tail and was forced to buy a new hull at the end of the second season because of the rivets leaking, and popping out as well as busting a holw through the floor twice |

I had an Alumacraft for about 4 years with a 23GDLT on it. After the first year it began to leak. Wait and get what you want. I'm not much help on the custom shops though. I've been satisfied with what is offered through mass prod. However - I'm shopping ![]() |

I'm using a riveted 1648 polarkraft to float a 36PD. It works for my conditions. I don't hit a lot of rocks or stumps, just shallow muddy bottoms and cattails. I'm sure I could tear it up I wanted to, but what's the point? My goal was to use it until I needed to move-up, but so far it's been doing fine. No leaks. Steel-flex helps too. I had pods on the boat from when I used a long-tail - I took the pods off because they got in the way. Mine works well in 4-12" mud with organic crap in it. Our run-off/silt is very clayish here, but I've gone across silt flats (100 yds) with water only an inch or two deep leaving big ruts. Pretty sure I would have been in a bad position if I had stopped. M. |

Not many people here have welded hulls, mud hulls just haven't hit that hard here yet, they're busy wearing out their old polarkrafts. Holding up fine so far. Seen a 18' Polarkraft wear a 36pd for a few years, and lots of Mudbuddies (I know, but we have a dealer) on them. I dunno how we got so many damn Polarkrafts here anyways. |

All depends on where and how you run it. I run in southern Minnesota and see only riveted hulls. I have a "custom shop" hull and guarantee most guys that have the riveted ones will not do the stuff I do. Most waters here are not near the mud conditions of down south, but the vegetation can be thick and when I do find the mud it is "eat sh*t and get the f*ck out of my way!!!!!" |
