Did a search on here and didn't get any results, but I think some have discussed this or something like it. http://durafix.com/ Basically heat the metal with a propane/ mapp gas torch and solder/braze/ weld the stuff on there. It has good reviews online. Has anyone on here messed with it? I have a small pin hole (about the size of a #2 pencil lead) on the bottom of a a rivited jon boat that I think would be perfect to fix it, if it works. I had put 5200 caulk on it and that did the trick, but 5200 is starting to wear off. For $25, I think it would be easier than finding an aluminum welder in my area to fix this .063 gauge hull if it works. Thoughts? Opinions? Testimonials? |

I have used it before for filling holes and it worked great!(It is harder than it looks but does work) |

I used on a old Lowe I had that a crack on the bottom at the transom Worked good but like the others said its not as easy at it looks |

Thanks. I am fairly experienced at welding steel with mig, arc, and oxy-acetelyne. I've also brazed steel and soldered my share of copper pipe. I think I am going to give it a shot. |

Thanks. I've actually welded some aluminum before myself. Not a pro by any means, but I have used an aluminum spool gun and some TIG. I don't have access to these machines anymore, or I would just go that route. Aluminum is definetly a different beast than steel. The boat can and will be flipped over for this repair. It is a 1436 riveted jon. I also have some scrap aluminum tubing I was going to practice on. I may even try it on an empty beer can to practice on some thin metal. If you watch the entire video, you can see them attempt to drill and punch a hole through the weld and it appears that the repair is much stronger than the base metal. But then again the video is an "informercial" so I was a little skeptic. That is why I was looking to see if anyone had real world experience with this stuff. I am going to order some up and try it out. I'll post up a review when I get it done. Thanks again. |

It does seem pretty impressive in the video. I skeptical of the hardness though. The drilling part has to be bullshit. I've been drilling a lot of holes lately in 1/4" STEEL.. A good bit will cut steel with ease.STEEL is way harder than every aluminum alloy. So what im getting at is that a mediocre bit will cut aluminum no problem. |

Yes the drill bit part is absolutely BS. With it being such a small boat that will make it a hell of alot easier and also it has to be less than .100'' material which will make it easier to keep hot. One of the keys to welding any metal but especially alluminum is prep. Make sure it is CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN, wire brush, sand, and to go the extra mile it never hurts to wipe it with alchohol before. Im anxious to here your results. |
