You can make a 5'6" rake smooth or you can make a 7' sharp and blunt. I feel it's more about the shape of the rake than the length. Make it too long like over 7' on say a 16 or 17' boat and you will see the down side. Right now your boat has enough motor for the load so it's not an issue.

Well I have logs, flooded terraces, beaver dams and other obstacles that make the shorter rake seem less functional. But I DO need to be able to carry 600-750 lb passenger/equipement loads without the boat falling on its face. That load won't be constant but it will happen every now and then
