Post 18X44 Go Devil boat. What size outboard?
Anyone actually have personal experience with this? I have a 2013 18X44 Go Devil boat with a 35GDSD. Am considering putting a small outboard. I use almost exclusively to pole for reds in the marsh. I was thinking of a 25-30 HP tiller. Would this be underpowered? I think the boat is a tank and well built but I do wonder about the so-called "outboard effect" on a mudboat hull so I don't want to go too high as I plan on keeping the hull. I would like to stay light so the smallest possible engine to safely power it would be my ideal. My SD pushes it approx 34 and that is plenty fast enough for me.

In hindsight I wished I had done this from the beginning with the noise about mudmotors being restricted or restrictions under consideration. This is my first boat, so, live and learn I guess.

Why don't you want to use your SD? It will perform about the same as a 25 outboard, and I thought putting an outboard on a GD boat voided the warranty.

on the old boats they made it voids the warranty. Now they have reinforced the transom to allow an outboard is what they told me! I been thinking about putting a 40hp on my 18x60 for fishing season. let me know how it performs please. Thanks

That 1844 would perform well with a 25hp or 30hp Mercury

I read someone ran a 60hp tiller and it was awesome. I thought about a 60-90hp jet on the back of my 1854 gator tail before i got into airboats

I have a buddy with the same boat. He alternates a 35 LT and 60 outboard. That boat with outboard blew my mind in a chop on matagorda. I couldn't believe how well it handled the chop and rode real good with three guys.

25 ran fine on my 1644. Don't see why it won't do the same on a 1844. Some of the older Yamaha 40s would also work great.

So, I waited a while before posting a review. In January of 2018 I put a 40hp Mercury with a big tiller and Atlas microjacker. The jack controls are mounted on the tiller arm. I haven't looked back. The difference is amazing and its like a whole new boat. Obviously,it runs faster than with my old 35GDSD (33mph vs 24). Better on fuel and quieter to boot. It opens up a lot more fishing areas in a day for me.
