My next will be 1848 more than likely, but if I can find a good deal on a 2048, I may go that route too.

There now, is that clear as mud??

Never compared the two, but if you look around all you see and hear about is the 1848 being the most compatable fit for these motors. I am sure you can go longer and your boat will still move and perform fine, but then it cost more to build and you need a longer trailer. Maybe thats why the builders stick to 17 and 18 foot production boats.

Jason, I don't have any experience with the 48" bottom, but I was extremely suprised at how well James Averitt's 20x54 runs. of course, he has a modded PD, but I was still suprised. It doesn't seem to me like it's any slower than what a 18x54 would be. maybe the same principle applies to 48".

2 completely different chine designs... but with my 27 I saw almost identical speeds between a 16x38 round chine, and a 20x36 square chine.

Jason, crews is right on the money. The speed will be around the same with the two but the 20' boat will plane faster and step a bigger load better. Depending on how much of a load you plan on running the 20' boat might be your best bet. I can tell you that I can run 12 gallons gas, two peps, 60lbs dog, ice chest full of beer and still run around 27. Now for me that is my average big load, I may have a little more stuff in the boat while running to the camp but my speeds are still decent.
