Post boat winch
I've got an 18x48 grumman ribbed jon. Wondering if its possible to mount a winch on a boat like this? anyone got any pics of their setup or explain how they did it would be great. would like to try and put one on but also don't want to see it come flying off the first time i need it.

i don't think i can mount mine like that. my front deck is a flimsy piece of sheet metal. this is why i was wondering if anyone has done it on just a regular ribbed jon boat. my boat is welded but its not .125 aluminum.

thanks

On my jon, inside the boat, I drilled a hole through the ribs on the side where the crimp is. I set the winch on the bow and attach a chain to the ribs with small shackles. Or you can just attach the chain to the handles on the front. I've spun the boat around 180 on damn near dry ground and didn't have a any problems.

thats pretty slick, i'm curious as to how strong those handles are. When i got my boat, it was stuck on the side of a pond at my friends house and had to pull it out with a backhoe. granted it did have about 900lbs of shit in it but one of the handles we attached to came ripping off. i doubt pulling it with a winch will ever be that hard on them again.

I had my doubts too. That's why I drilled the ribs plus the fact I didn't really want to have the winch hanging over the water. I was scouting at the time, water was peter deep to a duck, and I was tryin to get to a mallard hole. I was in bit of a hurry to get unstuck and head back to another spot so I said phuck it and hooked on to the handle. I could've hooked on to both or to the ribs but you know how it goes when you're wantin them birds. Whomever welded them done a good job I guess. The boat did curl that mud up alot more than you see in the second pic and I thought my battery was going dead but by the time I got the boat almost straight that 3500# was starting to chit. I'm surprised the handle didn't break, either.

Once that water drops they sit on their porch having a good time watching the festivities.

I'm not sure but it looks like I can see some of my foot prints in your pic. I also see some dog tracks just curious if it was yours or mine. Did you have a dog with you that day you got stuck?

Nope. Just me. That was January 2011 if the date on my phone is correct. I'm not sure if I took the pic with my phone or if I imported it. I may be older.

That's when my pic is dated. I hunted that hole the day the water dropped. I'd say the water fell close to a foot just in the time I hunted. I was alone with no winch and stuck like chuck.

I was going in to scout, but said screw it after dry docking. Were you hunting the longer pond?

The one to the left. For all the trouble it was worth it for 2 green heads and a band. I should have come out with 4 green heads but that's how it goes sometimes.

That's the one I usually hunt too. Either, in the middle to the back where the smaller trees start or a little to the right of that and back where things start to thicken up.

I know someone hunts a little past midway on the right. I found shell casings the a few times.

We had good luck that year in that pond and the pond on the right. A lot of people like to get back there though.

That's funny. I really didn't see but a few people back there until the turn of the century. Just every now and then. Once SDs started getting popular people started coming out of the woodworks. We used to jump those dams if there was water to them, if not we'd make the hike. Those days were made for real hunting, something I truly miss. We've lost a lot of prime spots to these weekend warrior, mudmotor driving, duck dynasty watching, city yuppies.

I hear ya. I started hunting that area w a buddy who grew up hunting that area. We still make some hard long walks to beat out the cadillac hunters. Same with the wax.

I hear that. I hadn't been back to the wax or delta, but one time, since '99 and I can about imagine.
