Post prodigy vs gator tail
i have a GTR 35 on an alumacraft 1648. im looking into buying a mud hull for the motor but cant decide what to get or how long. i think i want 1854 from what i have read but cant decide now on gator tail or the prodigy and what is better for load carrying getting on plane. also the mud i go through is soft top but about 3-8 inches then its hard bottom, with my set up now i cant get moving without someone helping me with a push pole then i just creep never get sliding across it. but if im on plane then i go across it no problem. i want to be able to stop in the mud then take off no problem. what do you guys think about these 2 boats and what are the differences in the flat nose or the v rake.

Hard to beat a Gator-Tail on a Gator-Tail hull. Flat front is just that. It's flat. V-front will be shaped in a V.

1854 is def a good sized boat. I cant speak highly enough of Prodigy and their staff. I also love my boat and i should. It was built to the exact specifications and standards i wanted. Cant beat that.

I looked at both. I went gatortail. Nothing against prodigy, they make very nice boats. I'm beyond pleased with the performance and fit and finish of my new rig. I have no regrets about my decision.

So the truth about it is this... If both boats are spec'd out the same, then they will be almost identical in performance. There is a SLIGHT difference between them depending on the chine (gT uses either square or a version of a stepped chine, prodigy uses a tapered- although they also make a square if asked). The reality is that the two are almost NEVER spec'd out the same. The GT is a decent boat, but the prodigy boats typically have more options (weight), the come standard with more stringers, etc. So they are usually spec'd out heavier than the standard GT. But, that's up to you how you spec it out.

All other things being equal, flat bow will float higher, etc than the v bow just because it has less weight, but the difference is negligible (less reinforcement in the front of a flat bow). Most of us don't load our boats up enough given the big motors we run that getting up on plane is a difference maker between flat and v bow. What IS important is whether you cross big water. If so, when you hit waves with a flat bow it tends to deflect water forward, which then blows back into your face. A V bow deflects it to the sides better.

Consider your use, how much you want to option up the boat (Prodigy offers a LOT of options that GT does not if that's important to you) , and then go look at both.

I figured that was the only difference in the flat vs V bow. I cant really go look at them cause where i live there isnt a whole lot of these around, and the ones that are around are kinda like mine just thrown together (mud motor to any boat). Thats the reason for me asking what people like on here. If the flat front floats higher then will that be better in shallow water i take it? Also i dont really get what the square chine is or the tapered or round i guess. i look at these boats and they look the same to me just prodigy has more options like was said before.

What options are you wanting?

I see, sand (I know is hard on props but its whatvi have to deal with), and some shallow rocky areas I have to idle or push pole over, and yes stumps and lay down logs

3/16th is a must if you regularly see/hit stumps.

Give Prodigy a call. he'll build you one hell of a boat.

I love my Prodigy and they are excellent to deal with. They build a true custom boat so the sky is the limit in options if you are so inclined.
