 Joystick steering?
Anyone ever seen a set up with a remote steer system that has a hydrolic pump with actuator controlled by a joystick or switch rather then a steering wheel? I know this probably seems like an odd question, but I'm looking at building a new custom bowfishing rig this year and want to go with a Prodrive as my kicker. My current set up has a Kicker that has electronic throttle and steering system by powrtran. The issue I see is the power of a mud motor and weight is way to heavy for the powrtran and would need some sort of a hydrolic actuator. In theory this doesn't seem that complicated however I'd love to know if anyone has ever done it or seen it.
I don't want a steering wheel or push stick for several reason although I'm sure that would be easier. To clarify also the boat would have a normal outboad 150 plus with a surface drive just as my kicker run seperatly from the console and other motor.
Thanks

 Re: Joystick steering?
Ezyglide has a hydraulic stick. Different from typical stick steering. Pump is in the helm.
Beyond that, you're looking at finding a powerful enough electric or hydraulic motor, and rigging up a one-off system. There isn't a joystick style system that'll run a 20+ hp "kicker".

 Re: Joystick steering?
As slow as that is to react, there has to be a better solution.
I am sure bigger rams and a higher volume pump would eliminate that. Then there is the weight of the reservoir, oil, solenoids, lines, rams and electric motor and pump.
Surplus Center would be a good start for new hydraulic parts, or find an old lift gate and salvage the all in one unit.

 Re: Joystick steering?
SeaStar makes a auto pilot unit for their hydraulic system but it is a lot of $$$$$$$. It has a wireless remote. But I would look into a dual hydraulic helm.

 Re: Joystick steering?
UlgyMud, That is what I was thinking up but yes the speed is definately to slow for manuvering to try to catch up to a fish. That is kind of like what I have now but have a joystick that sits over the top of my button for left an right. I'll check out Ezy glide as well to see what they have. I really want to have all the controls in one nice cluster on a base.
Thanks for your ideas. here's my current console for my kicker, I'd like to do somethign similar.

 Re: Joystick steering?
I agree far to slow for my tastes. You could look into linear actuators like some guys are using on fan builds now
