Outboard on Prodigy 1854
Looking to put an outboard with a jack plate on my 1854 prodigy. I'm not sure I actually "need" a mudmotor as I seem to use the boat to shallow water fish redfish much more than anything else. I'm looking at outboards between a 70 to a 115. I've seen these boats with 40s, 70s, and a couple with 90s. I notices a 115 optimax pro xs and a 90 Yamaha are only about 10lbs different.
I love my boat, I just don't love the noise and relative slower speeds of the GTR. Any advice or recommendations?

Ive seen some boats lately that are way to heavy for a single lawnmower engine. Add mods and these motors take a beating trying to move boats that need over a 100 hp

That boat should run fine with a 75, a 90 would be just about perfect though. Unless you constantly push a huge load, the 115 isn't necessary.

Thanks. I'll look more into the 90's. I've been considering repowering the prodigy or buying a 17-18' flats or bay style boat. definitely pros and cons to each.

Is it console steer or tiller? I knew a guy with a, 70 I believe, tiller on a 1754 prodigy and it would scoot pretty good. I bet a 1854 with a 90 plus Hp outboard would be a really nice set up.

Re: Outboard on Prodigy 1854
I bought a 90 tiller because I got a really good deal, and set it up with a electric jackplate. I swap it out with the GTR when I need to... a 90 on my 1854 absolutely screams and is honestly too much motor even with a big load. Don't get me wrong, I like the power but a 60 would still push you 35-40ish with an average load. I found I really don't need the 90. I can't imagine what kind of a load that boat could move with a 115... it would be impressive.
My boat isn't a prodigy, but performs very well with the outboard. It is a pure flat bottom with 24" sides. Similar, I suppose.
The outboard is sooooo much nicer on 60+ mile runs. Smoother, less vibration, less work, more quiet, etc. The only thing I have to watch is high speed turning, as it will bounce a little if the trim is up some. I need an outboard in the fall and winter and a outboard in the spring and summer. Having both keeps me very flexible.
