Post Eastern Shore VA boat
I recently found out I will be moving to the Eastern Shore of VA. Plan to hunt chincoteague bay, Chesapeake bay but not far out in the bay's, marshes and inlets. Thinking about a mud boat to duck hunt, goose hunt, and fish for flounder and crab. What boat would you recommend that will be safe in these type waters?

Big, wide, tall sides.

Just like most of the women you see at walmart!

No one uses a mud boat there for a reason. Get a skiff.

I replied to you on a different page, but there are places that a mud rig would be beneficial. however the bay is not one of them. a skiff on the bay will beat your teeth out on a bad day. like a said on the other page a v-hull is best for the bay, a flat bottom is fine for creeks

I used to hunt those waters and ran an outboard on a bigger boat, and towed a pirogue or two behind me to get into the skinny waters. Much easier than running a mud rig, and much safer.

Oh yeah having a big boat is much safer. I mainly stay to the creeks and guts here on the ESVA so that is why the only boat i have is a 17ft lowe roughneck with a 40hp johnson but i plan on buying a mud rig for my next boat because there are places that hold ducks that i just can not get to due to low tide

Just get crafty and you can make it in some nasty waters. We used to run either a jones brothers skiff or my old 16ft xpress depending on where we were going. Tow a pirogue or two and you can get anywhere you need. We seldom had to make long runs through mud flats and for the most part you could trim the motor up and run slow and get around. There may be a few places a mud rig would be beneficial, but up there I wouldn't have that as my primary boat by any means.

Thanks guys for all the info! I can't wait to get me a boat and learn this place! I've heard the duck hunting hear has been crap the past couple of years, but I've got a feeling that compared to Eastern TN where I come from it will still be paradise!

It's a lot better than there, but still can be tough. Good amounts of wigeon, greys, and pins if you hunt the salt marsh right.

You hunting out of your boat or stationary blind? Where I'm from we run jets. Sounds like this may be a decent place to run one as well. On our skinny rivers that are sandy and rocky, in a jet I ran 3" of water a lot on plane. Just got remember to never come off plane or you in a world of shot lol.

I am not very familiar with jet motors but the marshes around are not hard by any means. you can quickly sink up to your a** in mud. I would think that the mud would cause a problem with the jet but again i have never ran one

Both. I've hunted currituck scissor rig style, laid in pirogues with grass matts, boat blinds, layouts. Lots of options there.

I would definitely recommend you go on a guided hunt and do a currituck scissor rig hunt. Only done in the pamlico sound and that general area. It's just a neat old style thing.

Let me add though, I don't live in that area any more. Had fun in the Atlantic flyway, but glad to be back in the Mississippi flyway.

Va_quack_smacker I sent you a pm on duck hunters chat with my number give me a call sometime when your free. Jets don't do at all down in the mud but they run great on top of mud if that makes since. Can run a mud flat with 3"-6" of water on plain for miles. If you stop your on a world of shot!!

I really like the scissor rig!! How is a Carolina skiff any better than say a 1860 mv welded job boat?

Right now I am thinking the gator trac 4 man gen II hide. That way I can have a good blind and also take it off to fish out of in the summer. Also they can make the sides higher im sure. Why would a outboard on this boat be more safe than a mud motor? Never had a mud motor before.

What about the prodrive sbx since they are self baling?

Man, you will have to go out on the water and see what will work.
Im in the south, and if you aint got a mud boat, you aint got much.
But its a different world up there.
Id go with a SBX if I was concerned with capsizing a boat. Then again, if that was my concern, I wouldn't be on the water.

Not sure how well the self bailing deal works if the boat is upside down.

You just go pirates of the Caribbean on them. It's a new kind of sneak boat.
