New boat help
Hi everyone. I am new here but I have been looking for a while.I am planning on buying a new 1648 alumacraft riveted jon. I will be pushing this with a 18hp longtail. It will be used on small lakes and rivers that can get pretty shallow. Mostly used in clean water but will see some vegitation.
My question is my local dealer has a mod v in stock but would have to order a flat bottom. Is it worth the 6-10 week wait for a flat or will the mod v be ok. I jave done a search on this and have found conflicting reports.
Thanks for any help

Re: New boat help
I'd wait for the flat bottom. Performance will be slightly better, although it won't be a huge difference on a rig like that. The flats are way easier to put a floor in if you ever decide to do that. I have a 1648 tin can, modvee. I've had a 16hp GDLT on it and now a 23hp GDSD. If you haven't purchased a motor, I would try to go with at least a 23. The weight won't be much more.

Re: New boat help
With the 16hp LT empty I was getting around 15, it would drop to around12-13 with a hunting load. 9x4 prop.
23hp SD, 21 empty, 17-18 with hunting load. I do have some small hooks between the bracing.

Re: New boat help
I would think one of the custom builders could build one as cheap as or not much more than what your looking at buying. One that is made to run a mud motor that will not hook. If you get one with the transverse ribs, it will in time develop a hook eventually. IMO

Re: New boat help
The boats i am looking at are 2000 plus tax. I guess I never looked into the custom route. I just assumed it would be considerably more. I am trying to run on a tight budget. The financial dept is already throughing a fit about it.

Re: New boat help
Keep in mind that rivets near the transom will eventually wear down and leak if you run in much sandy bottom.
