have a 35gdsd on an older 1644 gd hull. runs fast and well but obviously has the water problems coming over the transom and rides a bit low on plane. had wedges and they helped on plane but slowing down they dont. have a family friend who is an amazing welder and the thought came up to my ind of maybe cutting the transom down and converting it to a hunt deck. anyone have any insight or think its a dumb idea?

Its a tough thing to do.
But I've seen it done and work VERY well.
added an 18" hunt deck.

On the other hand, if it is added wrong, just ever so slightly, you will absolutely kill performance.

yes i wouldnt be adding to hull, just cutting down the existing and making the hunt deck. my thought was if i can add a 12+ inch hunt deck and raise the transom height a little ( the back of the open section of hull, but not where the motor would sit) then it may help fight my issues of water coming over the rear as i stop.

A blip of the throttle right before the wave arrives is a much cheaper solution and doesn't eat into usable space in the boat. Just a random thought. If you had reverse, it might be a different conversation, but not a concern with a gd.

I had this done on a boat (added a hunt deck by cutting into existing flotation pods) while converting it to a tall transom. It worked fine as a cheap temporary (<$500) solution when my wood core transom broke to get me through the rest of the season.

But russ is right....it's pretty easy to accelerate a tad right before the wake hits you and avoid the whole problem. Even with a hunt deck you will get water coming over the back if you stop too fast.

Water never even comes close to coming over my transom when I stop. I barely get much on my hunt deck. My buddies can't even take a dump off their huntdecks without getting their ankles wet. I am high and dry on mine when nature calls.

OP.... here's a thought.... check your amazing closed cell waterproof floatations foam in that GD boat.... might be a reason your ass end is sitting low.
