Post 1656 Havoc DBST with Surface Drive?
I currently have a 1656 Havoc DBSt with a 50HP Tohatsu and she rides like a dream. My only problem is the water gets so shallow here in Southern VA in the winter I cant even use the boat for what I bought it for. Was thinking of putting a Mudbuddy or GTR 37efi on it, not more or less for mud but just getting through the shallow water and stumps without ruining my motor. It wouldnt see much mud or vegetation, but more water thats 1-2 feet and some logs. Thoughts?

I bought a Vance manufacturing hydro jack plate plus it’s a kick plate for my fishin rig. With it jacked all the way up I can idle through 1-2 of water. Now granted I can go though on plane like my mud boat but it’ll still get me back to some shallow spots. I’m running a 1650 crestliner jon with a 50 merc four stroke for my fishin rig. I’d look into em and see if it’d be something for you. I got it through Fowler’s marine in Tennessee.

@iah2ofwlr I have a kick plate on my boat, but it just gets too shallow. Took it out the other day and went 200 yards, got stuck, turned around and put it on the trailer. My boat will float in 4-6 inches of water but just dont have anything to push it.

We run em all the time in arkansas. Its not the best combo but if shallow water running ability is all you’re after it’ll work just fine.

Absolutely love it. By myself it’ll push me 29-30 in 4 inches of water. 4 people a dog and blind 22-23 in 8-10 inches of water. Turns like a dream and doesn’t drift like most mud boats. Very happy with my purchase and it’s already paid for itself.

What motor did you buy and did you have to fill the holes in the transom from the 50 tohatsu? I'm assuming nothing will mount up the same...

I bought a GTR 37 EFI XD and love it. Thing is a work horse and well built. Would highly recommend. And Cooper River Marine filled the holes with almost like a silicone. I’m probably gonna get some hydro turf or something to cover them though just so it’s not so obvious, even though it me really not

I'm glad to hear it worked out! Thanks for the info.

Last question, what are you seeing for speeds, and wjat I really can't figure is how much more fuel that GTR will burn on the same trip

29-30 by myself in 4 inches of water. 22-23 with 4 people and a dog and blind in 8-10 inches. I ran for maybe 1-1 1/2 hours the other day and burned maybe 3-4 gallons or so.

I reckon all those teal birds all gone to disney world with all this Chilly weather there on the Cooper River? Glad to hear that you like your new Mud Motor.

I do enjoy the Atlas Jack Plate which I have my 50 Tahsou Tiller on my 20 foot skiff. The Atlas Jack Plate is a great addition on that rig. Now of course, I do not like to ride very fast like you Cooper River and Wando fellows like to run: F-A-S-T.

I loved my Tohatsu and if I ever go back to an outboard that will be the one I get! I had a kick plate on mine and that paid for itself in no time.

I actually live in Virginia but Cooper River is really the closest dealer to me. But I did take the new motor to Cooper River as soon as I got it put on. I loved the habitat they had there! Very ducky looking lol.
