So got my 16x48 bass tracker all gutted and ready to party with a surface drive. Bought a '15 35 Go Devil that shows up here in UT on Tuesday. Not crazy about this boat, its temporary. Was capped hard with budget and priorities were big block motor and be ready by this duck season. Stashing my money away all over again to buy a newer (possibly brand spankin new) hull.

17-18' hull. I like War Eagle, Express, Havoc or an Excel boat. Excel boat would prolly be the easiest as far as what dealer is closest to my current location. Any body got any hull suggestions? I've sold myself on the mod v given all the different terrain il cover and depending on where work takes me.. $10k budget hull and trailer only.

A mud motor performs its best on a true flat hull, I know that, but crossing big water at 3am in 20 mph winds isn't always your most ideal situation for a true flat bottom boat (maybe not for any aluminum boat   )

I'm open to any hull suggestions, just need something that'll be good all around and last me long time, and not balls sketchy crossing big water in wind or big river (Red, Arkansas, Little River.. etc.). Doing my research and wanna get the best for price.

Thanks,

I’d look into anything that can be ordered with 24” sides then. The mod v all the way back to the transom will hurt performance and be more dangerous than a well powered flat bottom hull.

The flat bottom isnt what makes it unsafe in bad conditions. The flat bottom makes it a rougher ride, but you should be worried about size and side height, and decision making.

I don’t think anyone really wants to rehash this, so first, try google and refine your searches to MMT for accurate info.

Second, I think you’ve picked probably the worst possible hulls possible in all your suggestions thus far. Try the search function.

Or Deadfowl (duckhunterf250 on here), prodigy, gatortail, prodrive, wc, uncle J, and alweld to name a few more that people seem pretty happy with. Don't stick to godevil just because you bought a godevil motor. There are some I didnt recommend for various reasons, but not going into that.

I appreciate all the suggestions. Go devil makes a reliable rig and I like dealing with them always. Not ruling go devil out by any means ( :x BUT THEIR HEAVY AF...) I was kinda wantin .100 gauge but what do I know.. right a true mud hull is .125 but I like being light. The brands i said I may be interested in... War Eagle - theres a War Eagle dealer in Boise ID 4 hrs from me, Excel- Mud Buddy guys local here in SL are a dealer for excel, Lowe Boats- thought they may b more affordable & primarily, theres a Lowe boat dealer in Heber UT... Xpress- based in Hot Springs AR where my mom lives.

The brands I listed a lot revolves around whats more accessible or whats nearby, I could've missed something but whats above pretty much covers what ive found within a 500 mile radius of me (less alumacraft or tracker which both are hard passes). Its northern UT theres not jon hull (especially not mud hull) dealers around every corner. Buying closer or local means less hassle dealing with shipping a hull, with the exception of buying from Warren Coco which could def be the play.

I'll let ya'll know which route I take, & for what its worth I typically always do a search before starting a thread, no matter which search engine you use you always end up with scattered info or digging forever depending on what your looking for. This is gonna be my first real deal off the lot kinda thing paying my own cash money for so I'm hung on gettin good info and doing it right so started thread.

A heavier .125 mud hull built for that motor will give far better performance than a lighter hull like you’re suggesting. You should seriously consider actually listening to the good advice consistently being offered here. You don’t know what you’re talking about and everyone here consistently is trying to steer you away from a decision you’ll regret.

Make a drive or pay the extra $ if you have to, rather than regretting a decision for years but getting a hull that will not perform well. You’re already looking at buying a brand new hull, so why not actually get what’s right rather than a band aided together crappy solution.

On the other hand though, you probably haven’t ever driven a SD before and who knows if it’ll actually be worth it where you are, so you may already be to the point of regretting your decision and you don’t know it yet.

GD hulls sure Aren’t a bad price. Alwelds run fine with a GD motor too.

I run a 1760 Lowe Roughneck - thing performs amazingly well with a SD.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with running a mod v hull. Im doing it now with a g3/gtr.

Runs like a dream. Fast, turns better than any true flat bottom boat out there, and is lighter to boot.

Post subject:  Re: Best mod v hull for 35 surface drive

There are some things wrong with it for certain applications. I dont have an issue with mod v boats in some circumstances, but there is a reason we primarily use flats. Size being equal, a mod v will not get up as shallow, it wont carry a load quite as well, and it will bog down easier in thick grass. Also, weight, many times, is the same or heavier because of the design of some mod Vs. Point being, your statement can't be used to blanket in all applications the advantages you're claiming. In your case, it may be applicable, but I bet a flat mud hull can and has been made as light, which means itll plane better, carry a load easier, and run just as fast if everything else was the same. It wont turn as well. No argument there.

I'm with Russ, your claim is out of context. You bring that mod v here and put against a mud hull. On top of getting stuck, hung up and beached your tin can will be best to shit.

Ps. I ran a SD on a semi v, so I know first hand the differences.

Give you an example. I'd take a stock mud rig. Over a v with a stage 3.

I would not consider any of the hulls you mentioned. Listen to the brands Russ mentioned and maybe throw in Instagator. All of the custom builders can build it .100 or .125 shaped exactly how your heart desires. If you never ever have to worry about stumps or any kind of foreign objects then you might get away with .100. I wouldn't personally, but what do I know?

This is what you get with .100. If I knew then what I know now I would not have bought one with .100.
