Hey guys, new poster here. I did a search but didnt come up with much. I have a 1750 beavertail with pods that currently has a 27 horse LT powering it. I am looking for a change. I would like to repower it with a 40 hp gtr however am unsure if I get the short transom model if it will suffice. Im worried about washover when stopping or reversing. I dont really want to buy a whole new boat as this one is paid for, and Im a little skeptical about trusting a welder in my area to build the transom up. Thanks! Zach |

That size hull will be fine with a short transom motor. Instead of worrying about the transom height, you should worry about cutting off those pods before even mounting any type of surface drive on the hull |

I had a short transom boat once. That will be my ONLY short transom boat ever! Your concerns about washover are warranted. Trying to power out of vegetation in reverse and washover when coming to stop, especially while loaded down with gear, is terrible in a short transom boat and unless you don't mind getting wet and always having water in the back of the boat all over your stuff, get a tall transom. |

I had that boat in a 1754 with a 35hp gator tail. If you plan on a surface drive rig, just sell the boat and get one with the longitudinal stringers and no pods. |

Not a big difference, but the engine 4 - 5" lower means that much less height to grab a limb. Other than that, there isn't one. #CFFITR #TheGhostBoat #whoneedsphysicsihaveamudmotor |

The tall transom just sets up too high. We dont have a lot of open road here so idling around and going through the woods is the norm. Do that with a tall transom and you will have to pick your line to traverse the woods. One has to set down and drive. No standing and driving here without getting beat around by limbs. I have a buddy that has a tall transom gtr and he cannot follow me through the woods. There are several locations that I hunt and have to go under a bridge or log and he just cant go. Motor sets up too tall. So explain why you dont like short transom? |

Because you can't back up or come to quick stop without backwash flooding the back of the boat. |

OK, but the OP was not asking about a hunt deck. I've never owned a short transom with a hunt deck so I'm not gonna profess to know anything about them and hunting timber with low-hanging branches might be about the ONLY application where this set-up might have an advantage(although I'm still a little skeptical). But, for 90% of other applications, a tall transom is better IMO. I still find it a little difficult to believe that if you had to really power out of any mud or veggies in reverse that you still wouldn't get backwash over the transom, even with a hunt deck. Maybe you guys never have to do that in the timber. |

I have had mine wot in reverse while fishing, hunting, etc. In various conditions. Absolutely 0 backwash inside the boat with the hunt deck. I'm not sure why your making assumptions when you haven't run one. |

Because, although I haven't run a 16" transom with a hunt deck, I have run a 16" transom without one and when powering out in reverse I've had backwash fly into the boat well beyond what a hunt deck would provide clearance for. |
