Post 25 MPH top speed GTR 40 on a 1854
Looking at other threads, seems like I am not getting the right performance out of my boat. We have an uncle j 1854, and a new Gator Tail 40. 2 blade stock prop. There is pretty much no hole shot, takes quite a while to get on a plane. Once it gets going the speed picks up well, but it tops out around 25 mph. No cavitation issues.

Any recommendations?

Maybe a motor height to transom height mismatch? Does gt even make short transom motors still?

GT doesn’t make short transoms anymore. Don’t remember what year they stopped but they don’t make them on the new XD units.

What 2 blade are you running?

Sounds like your valves may be like the ones that came on my Briggs. 40% leakage off the lot. Check and get a valve job if that’s it

I moved the motor up to the highest position on the bracket. I haven't run it yet, but my brother did and said its already running better. I'll get the top speeds and RPM's later this week and let you know. Thank you for the help!

Moving the motor on the bracket helped. 2 guys on the boat hit 4650 RPMs and 27 mph. Still having some trouble w hole shot under a load, but its a big boat. Performed great in some low tide creeks, ate right through it in places I used to get stuck, in a smaller boat

Throw a fat blade on it.
Better load carrying
Better hole shot
My 1760 didn’t like the stock prop much at all. I put the fat blade on it and it woke it up.

I have the same boat as Buzz with a 40GT.

I have the stock CA57 2 blade.

This is my 1st fall with the motor and I'm still getting used to it.

I know my boat is not a mud boat, so my expectations were low, but better than my 40 longtail.

With the CA57 prop empty and by my self I ran 27-29 depending on the wind.

With a load, 2 guys, dog and gear I ran 18 to 20 mph in open water with the wind and 22 mph in the mud.

Now... Coming out of the mud into the wind I get right on plan and hit 20 with a load. Once out in the open water, I slowly loose speed even though my RPMs are in the 4600 range.

I think it's the prop, that I'm not getting a good push.

I couldn't find any available Big Blade props, so I have ordered a similar blade from Hill Marine to try.

Has anyone run the Hill Marine 12.25/10 prop.

Am I missing anything with my boat?

I think the Ca57 is a good prop for the mud. I have 2 if anyone needs a CA57 prop. Ordered it as a spare and has never beet used. PM is interested.

25mph don't sound to bad for a heavy hunt load top end.
mine runs 24 to 26 mph ,3guys a dog and all of decoys and gear. mine has been hot rodded to 55hp. turning a hammer prop 4200r-4600pms . my boat is 1854 and heavy like a tank. i would call and ask Baggy what he thinks about it .he make a living at propping out boats. he fixed mine. it hops out of hole and carries a load well now. but what you are starting with sounds pretty good all ready. custom boat are heavy.
